GAME 69: MARINERS 5, GIANTS 4

AP photo -- Elaine Thompson

In 25 words or less: Felix wins. Barry Bonds homers but is later mowed down by JJ Putz for the final out. Great game.

This one featured Noah Lowry going up against Felix Hernandez. The start originally was going to go to Gil Meche, but he came down with some lower back stiffness. Hernandez was pushed up in the rotation by a slot, but thanks to the off-day on Monday, he still got his four days of rest, so it's not like he was going on three days' rest or anything like that, though at times in this game it sort of seemed like it. Keep in mind that Kenji Johjima was behind the plate for this Hernandez start, whereas it was Rene Rivera last time. On the team front, the Mariners were trying to wash out the sick taste of broom left over from the three games in Oakland. On hand to see whether the Mariners would do just that included Nick Collison of your Seattle SuuuuuuperSonics, Kim Thayil of the unfortunately defunct seminal Seattle band Soundgarden, and the Mariners' newly signed Cal Bear, Brandon Morrow. As usual, Morrow is not to be confused with this guy.

TOP 1ST
Randy Winn fell behind 0-2 and grounded hard to first, though he took nine pitches to do so. Omar Vizquel nubbed a 0-2 pitch to short. Ray Durham grounded the 2-0 pitch to third. Hernandez threw 15 pitches.

BOTTOM 1ST
Ichiro lashed the second pitch a few rows into the rightfield seats.
»» MARINERS 1, GIANTS 0
Adrian Beltre fell behind 0-2 before whipping a 1-2 pitch into left for a single. Jose Lopez had a 3-0 count go full, then fouled off five pitches before spanking the eleventh pitch of the at-bat through the left side for a single, moving Beltre to second. Raul Ibañez reached for a pitch low and away and flew out to right, moving Beltre to third (Winn's arm in right). Richie Sexson worked an 0-2 count for a walk to load the bases, taking seven pitches to do so. Pitching coach Dave Righetti visited the mound. Mike Morse popped a 2-2 pitch just short of the track in right (Winn), scoring Beltre and moving Lopez to third.
»» MARINERS 2, GIANTS 0
Kenji Johjima took a 1-2 pitch down and in as Sexson nabbed second without a throw. Johjima ended up working the 1-2 count for a walk. Willie Bloomquist popped the first pitch (why?!?!) to Greene behind the plate to the screen. Lowry threw 41 pitches.

TOP 2ND
Barry Bonds crushed a 2-1 inner-half fastball about 15 rows or so into the rightfield seats. Damn.
»» MARINERS 2, GIANTS 1
Moises Alou popped a 1-2 pitch down the line, but Ibañez couldn't snag it in the sliver of foul ground down the leftfield line. Alou ended up grounding hard to third on a 2-2 pitch. Steve Finley drilled a liner on the first pitch, reaching the first row in rightfield in a hurry.
»» GIANTS 2, MARINERS 2
Pedro Feliz took an 0-2 curve over the outside corner. Mark Sweeney was ruled to have held a checkswing on a 1-2 low curve and later ripped a double down the rightfield line on a full-count, beating a multi-hop throw from Ichiro. Todd Greene was ahead 2-0 before whiffing on a 2-2 curve down and away. Hernandez threw 26 pitches and had 41 through two.

BOTTOM 2ND
Yuniesky Betancourt rolled the second pitch to second. Ichiro punched the second pitch off a diving Vizquel and into shallow center for a single. Beltre hit the first pitch hard, but grounded it right to Vizquel for a 6-4-3 double play. Lowry threw only five pitches and had 46 through two.

TOP 3RD
Winn slapped a 2-0 belt-high fastball into the fourth row of seats beyond the rightfield wall.
»» GIANTS 3, MARINERS 2
Vizquel popped the first pitch to Sexson in foul ground on the right side. Durham flew out to center. Bonds walked on a 3-1 pitch down and away. Alou chopped an 0-2 pitch to third. Hernandez threw 16 pitches and had 57 through three.

BOTTOM 3RD
Lopez fell behind 0-2 and wound up flying out high to right on a 1-2 pitch. Ibañez slapped a 1-2 pitch down the leftfield line and off the angle of the stands for a double. Sexson popped a 1-2 pitch high into right, moving Ibañez to third, and Winn's throw was wide to the cutoff, but Lowry backed up third. Morse had the hitters' counts before slapping a full-count pitch down the rightfield line and off the angled stands, netting himself a double and scoring Ibañez.
»» GIANTS 3, MARINERS 3
Johjima one-hopped the leftfield wall below the manual scoreboard with the first pitch, scoring Morse and getting a double for himself.
»» MARINERS 4, GIANTS 3
Bloomquist turned on a 2-0 inside pitch and pulled it far but foul. Bloomquist ended up poking the next pitch through the left side for a single to score Johjima. Bloomquist tried to stretch it into a double, but he was nailed on the cutoff of the relay.
»» MARINERS 5, GIANTS 3

Lowry's line: 3 innings, 5 runs, 8 hits, 2 walks, 0 strikeouts, 71 pitches (46 strikes)

TOP 4TH
Finley whiffed on an 0-2 curve in the dirt. Feliz scorched a 3-1 pitch just past a diving Beltre and down the leftfield line for a double. Sweeney one-hopped the wall in rightcenter with the second pitch, good for a double and an RBI as Feliz crossed the plate.
»» MARINERS 5, GIANTS 4
Greene walked on a full-count pitch inside and in the dirt. Pitching coach Rafael Chaves came to the mound for a visit. Winn was ahead 2-0 before grounding hard to first, where Sexson stopped but bobbled the ball, then underhanded to Hernandez covering first, who nearly overran the bag as Sweeney and Greene advanced to third and second. Vizquel bounced the second pitch to first. Hernandez threw 22 pitches and had 79 through five.

BOTTOM 4TH
Brad Hennessey came in for Lowry. Betancourt popped to a trotting Bonds in leftcenter. Ichiro grounded hard to second on a 2-0 pitch. Beltre fought off an up-and-in 1-2 pitch and dumped it into shallow center for a single. Lopez flew out high to Winn on the rightfield line on the second pitch. Hennessey threw 13 pitches.

TOP 5TH
Durham laid a nice first-pitch bunt along the third-base side, but Beltre did that charging barehand-and-throw thing that he does so well. Bonds got ahead 2-0 before foul-tipping an change up and away into Johjima's glove. Alou whiffed badly on a low 2-2 breaking ball. Hernandez threw 11 pitches and had 90 through five.

BOTTOM 5TH
Ibañez was ahead 3-0 and walked on a low full-count pitch. Sexson bounced the first pitch to short to start a 6-4-3 double play on which Vizquel barehanded the ball just to show off, but he's very good. Morse split his bat on a grounder to short, where Vizquel fielded the ball, though the barrel of the bat came out near him as well. Hennessey threw ten pitches and had 23 total.

TOP 6TH
Finley walked on a full-count pitch down and away. Feliz popped the first pitch to right. Sweeney flew out to left. Greene bounced the second pitch to short and Sexson was able to jump to pick Betancourt's high throw.

Hernandez' line: 6 innings, 4 runs, 6 hits, 3 walks, 5 strikeouts, 103 pitches (62 strikes)

BOTTOM 6TH
Johjima worked a 1-2 count full and poked a single up the middle. Bloomquist rolled an 0-2 pitch to second, where Durham ranged over to field the ball and tagged the second-base bag, but threw high to first and into the dugout as Bloomquist was awarded second. Betancourt didn't even have a pitch thrown to him when Hennessey and Vizquel caught Bloomquist redhanded on a daylight play at second. Betancourt fell behind 0-2 and flew out high to first on a 1-2 pitch. Hennessey threw 13 pitches and had 36 total.

TOP 7TH
Eddie Guardado came in for Hernandez. Winn walked on a full-count pitch down and in, the eighth pitch of the at-bat. Vizquel bunted the first pitch to a charging Sexson on the right side (3-4 putout), moving Winn to second. Durham whiffed on a 1-2 fastball down and away. Bonds was intentionally walked.

Rafael Soriano came in for Guardado. Alou flew out to Ibañez near the leftfield corner on the first pitch, one that could have been a bit more down. Soriano threw one pitch.

Guardado's line: 2/3 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 2 walks, 1 strikeouts, 17 pitches (8 strikes)

BOTTOM 7TH
Ichiro flew out high to center on a 2-0 pitch. Beltre looped a flyout to Durham moving back into right on an 0-2 pitch. Lopez was up 2-0 but lined out to left on a 2-2 pitch.

Hennessey's line: 4 innings, 0 runs, 2 hits, 1 walk, 0 strikeouts, 47 pitches (29 strikes)

TOP 8TH
Finley rolled a single up the middle. Feliz rolled the second pitch slowly to second, where Lopez backhand flipped to Betancourt at second, but Feliz was able to barely beat the throw back to first. Sweeney had the hitters' counts and took the 3-1 pitch up and away for a walk, moving Feliz to second. Greene had a 1-1 count on him when Chaves came to the mound for a visit. Greene wound up whiffed on a 2-2 slider away.

JJ Putz came in for Soriano. Winn was mowed down by a 97mph high fastball. Putz threw four pitches.

Soriano's line: 1 inning, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 strikeout, 16 pitches (9 strikes)

BOTTOM 8TH
Jeremy Accardo came in for Hennessey. Ibañez whiffed on a 1-2 breaking ball down and away. Sexson bounced out to short. Morse chopped the first pitch off the plate and to third.

Accardo's line: 1 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 1 strikeout, 9 pitches (7 strikes)

TOP 9TH
Vizquel was ahead 2-0 and would ground out to second. Durham checked his swing on an 0-2 pitch away and ended up getting blown down by a 2-2 belly-high 96mph fastball. Bonds worked a 1-2 count full before taking a splitter for strike three.

Putz' line: 1 1/3 innings, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts, 20 pitches (12 strikes)

Gameball: Adrian Beltre.
It's been about two and a half weeks since Mike Hargrove finally work up and messed with the order of the starting lineup. One of the biggest shakeups in the whole thing was moving Adrian Beltre up to the second slot. As indicated below, Beltre is hitting .275 since the shakeup, which isn't exactly 2004 numbers for him, but we're never going to see that again anyway. His batting average as of right now is .236, 12 points better than it was before the lineup was messed with, and if you ask me, it's at the expense of Jose Lopez. Anyway, Beltre's never dipped below .229 this month. In May, though, he was as low as .202. Of course, with the state Beltre was in, he needed a .264 May to bump his .189 average to .230. The weird thing is that he's hitting .254 this month, worse so far than in May, but he's had only two hitless games out of the fourteen in which he's played. In May, he had seven hitless games out of 28. This month, he has three multi-hit games, whereas he had six last month. The good thing about his getting on base in all these games is that we know he can get base hits and he's still got something. The bad thing is that one hit out of four at-bats is still just .250. I'm not even taking about the lack of power either.

Goat: Yuniesky Betancourt.
He's only in this spot because he was the only Mariner hitter that didn't reach base. Nonetheless, he's still hitting .313 this month. How fortunate are the Mariners to have a defensive whiz of a shortstop that hits .288 and bats in front of Ichiro once the lineup turns over? I might be obsessed with what Hargrove could or should do with this lineup and everything, but I wonder if there would be anything good to come out of moving Betancourt out of the ninth slot. Of course, he's got Ichiro hitting behind him, so you could say he might be getting some nice pitches to hit. However, the effect of Jeremy Reed hitting in front of Betancourt has been just slightly better than before, and I don't have the numbers of non-Reed people hitting in the eighth slot tabulated. Still, I wonder if there would be anything gained from moving Betancourt out of the ninth slot. For now, I'm leaning against the idea. Ironically, even with Betancourt hitting in front of him, Ichiro's on pace for 52 RBIs, which would be his second-lowest total for a Major League season (he had 51 in 2002). Of course, I think that's more of an indictment of the Mariner offense in general rather than of Ichiro.

LINEUP SINCE THE TWEAK (May 30th)
Ichiro 36-for-72 (.500), 3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 homers, 7 RBIs, 5 walks, 2 strikeouts
Beltre 19-for-69 (.275), 3 doubles, 3 homers, 10 RBIs, 6 walks, 11 strikeouts
Lopez 16-for-67 (.239), 7 doubles, 1 homer, 11 RBIs, 5 walks, 12 strikeouts
Ibañez 18-for-55 (.327), 3 doubles, 1 triple, 5 homers, 17 RBIs, 9 walks, 9 strikeouts
Sexson 12-for-60 (.200), 1 double, 4 homers, 16 RBIs, 6 walks, 15 strikeouts
Everett 12-for-50 (.240), 1 homer, 3 RBIs, 3 walks, 10 strikeouts
Johjima 14-for-53 (.264), 5 doubles, 3 RBIs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts
Reed 9-for-37 (.243), 1 double, 1 homer, 2 RBI, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts
Betancourt 17-for-57 (.298), 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 homer, 7 RBIs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts

Noah Lowry didn't have it by a long shot in the first inning, which was quite apparent. Ichiro wasn't patient with him and decided to rip a homer, but Ichiro being patient just isn't his thing. Adrian Beltre got five pitches out of his at-bat, but it wasn't until Jose Lopez worked his count for eleven pitches that everyone truly knew Lowry might be having control issues. Raul Ibañez got four pitches out of his at-bat before Richie Sexson took seven pitches to force a walk from an 0-2 count. Mike Morse needed five pitches to hit his sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 in the first. Like Sexson two hitters beforehand, Kenji Johjima worked an 0-2 count for a walk, though he needed six pitches. At this point, the Mariners had runners on the corners with two out. Lowry having given up a homer, two singles, two walks, and a sacrifice fly, and he had thrown an insane 40 pitches in the first and had gotten two outs. Normally this is where every hitter coming to the plate makes the pitcher throw a strike before even thinking about swinging. So what does Willie Bloomquist do? He swings at the first pitch and pops out behind the plate, of course! I know only so much can happen with two out, but Lowry was really on the ropes that inning, and the Giants were extremely lucky to get out of that down just 2-0, and they easily could have won this game.

Here we sit with Felix Hernandez having won four straight starts. It's odd knowing that besides the crazy game he threw in Anaheim, he hasn't come close to hitting his stride yet. He gave up three homers in this game, but one was to Barry Bonds and the other two (Steve Finley and Randy Winn) were scorched line drives with the wind doing things inside the ol' ballyard. To say Felix wasn't sharp was probably an understatement since he walked three guys against five strikeouts. The ever-fun card to play, however, is the Rene Rivera-for-catcher card. Seriously, if Mike Hargrove wants to give Kenji Johjima a day off every once in a while, just have Rene Rivera catch every start by Felix. I guess the argument against this would be that Rivera's future won't be too lengthy with Jeff Clement comes down the pipe, so Felix would have to get used to throwing to a different catcher anyway. Still, it's nice to see Felix rip off a win streak even without getting back to the Felix we knew and loved last season.

This game probably isn't big in the large scope of things, but it was a fun one to watch. There was at least some excitement in town with Barry Bonds in the vicinity, but I must have gotten pretty wrapped up in the game since I clapped and exclaimed, "THERE YA GO!" when JJ Putz struck out Bonds for the final out of the game. It's been a while since I've actually yelled a positive exclamation at the computer monitor while watching a Mariner game.

GAME 68: ATHLETICS 9, MARINERS 6

AP photo -- Ben Margot

[initial partial post]

In 25 words or less: After the Mariners busted out the brooms against the Angels, they traveled to Oakland and the tables turned.

This one featured Jarrod Washburn going up against Esteban Loaiza. Loaiza had recently spent a night in jail after breaking the 120mph barrier in his Ferrari and failing a sobriety test. Also, Frank Thomas was placed on the disabled list with a strained right quadriceps. A win by Oakland would put a big dent in the momentum the Mariners had coming into the series. They had won nine games in eleven tries before losing the first two games of this series in Oakland.

TOP 1ST
The game start was delayed by Jay Payton running back to the dugout to get sunglasses. Ichiro bounced a full-count pitch along the right side to Loaiza, who underhanded to first for the out. Adrian Beltre flew out on a 2-0 pitch to Swisher in shallow left. Jose Lopez flew out to Scutaro near the mound. Loaiza threw 15 pitches.

BOTTOM 1ST
Marco Scutaro popped to Reed in shallow leftcenter. Nick Swisher flew out high to Betancourt on the grass in shallow left. Jay Payton popped the first pitch high to Betancourt on the infield grass. Washburn threw nine pitches.

TOP 2ND
Raul Ibañez reached but poked a single through the right side and into rightfield. Richie Sexson dumped the first pitch in front of Kielty in rightfield for a single (he might have gotten a bad read on the ball), moving Ibañez to second. Carl Everett bounced to first, where Johnson threw to try and start the double play, and Crosby tagged the bag and threw back to first, but Loaiza was still getting to the bag, and the ball went past. Ibañez scored on the play and Everett went to second.
»» MARINERS 1, ATHLETICS 0
Kenji Johjima drilled a ball toward the leftfield corner, where Swisher was there in time but the ball went off his glove and against the wall (ruled an error), moving Everett to third as Johjima got to second. Jeremy Reed was nailed by a 2-2 inside fastball that got him around the right hip, loading the bases. Yuniesky Betancourt singled through the left side on the second pitch, scoring Everett and keeping the bases loaded.
»» MARINERS 2, ATHLETICS 0
Ichiro fell behind 0-2 before bouncing a 1-2 pitch off of himself, but he was ruled to have been out of the batters' box when it hit him, and therefore was called out, much to the chagrin of both Ichiro and Hargrove. Beltre walked on a high 3-1 pitch, scoring Johjima and keeping the bases loaded.
»» MARINERS 3, ATHLETICS 0
Lopez grounded the second pitch to third, where Chavez threw to second for the force. Loaiza threw 29 pitches and had 44 through two.

BOTTOM 2ND
Eric Chavez was up 3-0 and walked on a 3-1 pitch outside. Bobby Kielty broke his bat and grounded to third to start a 5-4-3 double play. Bobby Crosby walked on four pitches. Jason Kendall fell behind 0-2 before punching a 1-2 pitch through the right side for a single, moving Crosby to second. Dan Johnson ripped a 2-0 pitch down the rightfield line for a double, scoring Crosby as well as Kendall, who beat the relay home.
»» MARINERS 3, ATHLETICS 2
Antonio Perez got ahead 3-0 before taking a full-count pitch up and in. Scutaro popped to right on a full count. Washburn threw 33 pitches and had 42 through two.

TOP 3RD
Ibañez fell behind 0-2 and whiffed on a 1-2 pitch down and in. Sexson worked a 1-2 count full before flying out to the leftfield track. Everett nubbed the second pitch to the right side, where Loaiza came off the mound to field it and beat Everett to the bag. Loaiza threw 13 pitches and had 57 through three.

BOTTOM 3RD
Swisher bounced a 2-2 pitch to third. Payton ripped a 2-2 pitch past a diving Sexson and down the rightfield line for a double. Chavez took an 0-2 breaking ball over the outside corner. Kielty cranked an outer-half first pitch over the wall in leftcenter, scoring Payton.
»» ATHLETICS 4, MARINERS 3
Crosby looped a fly to Lopez moving back into shallow right. Washburn threw 17 pitches and had 59 through three.

TOP 4TH
Johjima bounced the first pitch to short. Reed bounced to first. Betancourt whiffed on a 1-2 pitch up and away. Loaiza threw ten pitches and had 67 through four.

BOTTOM 4TH
Kendall grounded hard to third on the second pitch. Johnson fell behind 0-2 and nubbed to the right side, where there was some issues between Sexson and Washburn trying to get the ball, and Washburn got it and ran to the bag to try to tag Johnson, but it wasn't quite in time, apparently, and Hargrove came out to argue a bit (not enough video angles to definitively dispute this). Perez worked a 1-2 count for a walk, moving Johnson to second. Scutaro fell behind 0-2 before whiffing on a 2-2 breaking ball down and in. Swisher wrapped a ball into the gap in leftcenter that Reed looked to have had but overran, and it went to the wall for a double, scoring Johnson and Perez.
»» ATHLETICS 6, MARINERS 3
Payton grounded hard to first, and Sexson tossed over to a covering Washburn, who stepped on the bag barely in time to get the out on the sliding Payton. Washburn threw 26 pitches and had 85 through four.

TOP 5TH
Ichiro nubbed the second pitch to a charging Suctaro on the right side, who tried to shovel it with the glove to first, but it wasn't in time. Beltre watched as Ichiro nabbed second on the 2-0 pitch. Beltre was up 3-0 and walked on a 3-1 pitch. Lopez popped to center on the first pitch and the runners held. Ibañez flew out to Swisher on the leftcenter track on the second pitch. Sexson smacked a single through the left side on the second pitch, scoring Ichiro and moving Beltre to second.
»» ATHLETICS 6, MARINERS 4
Everett sent the first pitch through the left side for a single, scoring Beltre and moving Sexson to second. Pitching coach Curt Young came to the mound for a visit.
»» ATHLETICS 6, MARINERS 5
Johjima popped the second pitch to left. Loaiza threw 15 pitches and had 82 through five.

BOTTOM 5TH
Chavez lined a single into shallow right. Kielty grounded hard to third, where Beltre made a great stop along the line to start a 5-4-3 double play. Crosby nubbed the second pitch to the third-base side of the mound, where Washburn came off to field it and threw in time to first.

Washburn's line: 5 innings, 6 runs, 7 hits, 4 walks, 2 strikeouts, 91 pitches (52 strikes)

TOP 6TH
Reed fell behind 0-2 and scorched a 2-2 liner right to Johnson at first. Betancourt flew out to Payton in leftcenter on the first pitch. Ichiro bounced the second pitch to first.

Loaiza's line: 6 innings, 5 runs (3 earned), 6 hits, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts, 91 pitches (55 strikes)

BOTTOM 6TH
Emiliano Fruto came in for Washburn. Kendall took a 1-2 breaking ball over the inside corner. Johnson lined a 2-0 pitch into the rightfield corner for a double. Perez took a 1-2 breaking ball over the outside corner, to his chagrin. Scutaro took Ibañez to the leftfield track on the second pitch. Fruto threw 13 pitches.

TOP 7TH
Chad Gaudin came in for Loaiza. Beltre took Kielty to the track in right. Lopez popped high to left on the second pitch. Ibañez rode a ball off the base of the wall in center, and Payton tried to play the carom but had it go off his glove, enabling Ibañez to get to third with a triple. Sexson grounded hard to third. Gaudin threw 13 pitches.

BOTTOM 7TH
Swisher walked on a 3-1 pitch low and away. Payton fell behind 0-2 and stuck a 1-2 pitch through the right side for a single, moving Swisher to second.

George Sherrill came in for Fruto. Chavez popped the first pitch high to Sexson with the infield fly rule called. Kielty was up 3-0 and took a 3-1 pitch outside.

Rafael Soriano came in for Sherrill. Crosby dropped the second pitch in front of Ibañez in right, scoring Swisher and keeping the bases loaded.
»» ATHLETICS 7, MARINERS 5
Kendall foul-tipped a 2-2 outside fastball into Johjima's glove. Johnson poked the second pitch to the right side, where it went off of Lopez' glove and into rightfield for a single, scoring Payton and Kielty and moving Crosby to third.

GAME 67: ATHLETICS 7, MARINERS 2

AP photo -- Marcio Jose Sanchez

[initial partial post]

In 25 words or less: It's nice to know that going to Oakland has turned into a regular trip of horrors for the Mariners again.

This one featured Joel Piñeiro going up against Dan Haren. The Mariners were hoping to keep from having a losing streak after that stretch where they won nine of eleven and had a small three-game winning streak snapped. Of course, Piñeiro is Piñeiro and Oakland is Oakland, so...

TOP 1ST
Ichiro put a highish full-count pitch into center for a single. Adrian Beltre solidly lined a single into center that one-hopped a sliding catch attempt by Kotsay, moving Ichiro to second. Jose Lopez bounced a ball to third that ate up Chavez (no error was given on the play) and loaded the bases with nobody out. Raul Ibañez grounded a 2-2 pitch to second to start a 4-6-3 double play, scoring Ichiro and moving Beltre to second.
»» MARINERS 1, ATHLETICS 0
Richie Sexson whiffed on a 2-2 offspeed pitch. Haren threw 23 pitches.

BOTTOM 1ST
Mark Kotsay was ahead 3-1 before flying out to left on a full count. Nick Swisher flew out to Ibañez in leftcenter on the second pitch. Eric Chavez rolled the first pitch to short. Piñeiro threw ten pitches.

TOP 2ND
Carl Everett worked a 1-2 count full before singling through the right side (Kendall behind the plate was cupchecked on the foul-off of a 1-2 pitch). Kenji Johjima rolled to short for a 6-4 fielder's choice to force out Everett. Jeremy Reed rolled the first pitch to short for a 6 unassisted fielder's choice since Reed beat out the double play on the back end. Yuniesky Betancourt fell behind 0-2 before whiffing on a 1-2 pitch outside in the dirt (2-3 putout). Haren threw 13 pitches and had 36 through two.

BOTTOM 2ND
Frank Thomas was plunked on the left thigh. Bobby Crosby rolled a 2-0 pitch to third, where Beltre gloved it but had it go up into the air on him, and tried to throw to first, though he could have had the slow Thomas easily at second. Dan Johnson bounced to first for a 3-6 force on Crosby, moving Thomas to third. Bobby Kielty chopped the first pitch to first for the same play as the one previous, forcing out Johnson at second, except Thomas held at third. Jason Kendall fell behind 0-2 before putting the barrel on a 1-2 hanging breaking ball, driving it to left, but Ibañez dove for it and missed as it rolled to the wall, scoring Thomas and Kielty. Kendall got a double out of it.

BOTTOM 3RD
Kotsay flew out to Reed at the track in center on the second pitch. Swisher rolled out to second on the second pitch. Chavez walked on four pitches. »» ATHLETICS 5, MARINERS 1
Swisher fell behind 0-2 and fouled off two pitches before watching a ball, but Kotsay was thrown out on that pitch trying to steal second. Piñeiro threw 26 pitches and had 73 through four.

TOP 5TH
Reed lined out to left on the second pitch. Betancourt drove the second pitch a few strides short of the warning track in center where it was caught by Kotsay. Ichiro grounded out hard to short on an 0-2 pitch, partly thanks to a nice pick by Crosby. Haren threw seven pitches and had 77 through five.

BOTTOM 5TH
Swisher walked on four pitches. Chavez got ahead 3-0 and singled along the rightfield line on a 3-1 pitch, moving Swisher to third.

Jake Woods came in for Piñeiro. Bradley was ahead 3-1 and walked on a full-count pitch up and away, though Lopez had to block a short throw to second by Johjima in case it wasn't ball four. All told, the bases were now loaded. Crosby was up 2-0 before whiffing on a 2-2 inside fastball. Johnson drove the second pitch to Reed running to the wall in leftcenter, scoring Swisher.
»» ATHLETICS 6, MARINERS 1

TOP 7TH
Sexson walked on a 3-1 pitch. Everett rode a 1-2 pitch just short of the centerfield track for an out. Johjima chopped to Scutaro, who ran at Sexson coming down the line, but he tried to retreat back to first, and Scutaro tossed to first, where Johnson tagged the bag and tagged Sexson.

Haren's line: 7 innings, 1 run, 4 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts, 104 pitches (67 strikes)

BOTTOM 7TH
Chavez took a 2-2 pitch over the outside corner for strike three. Bradley grounded out to short. Crosby walked on a full count. Johnson was down 1-2 and took a 2-2 over the outside corner for strike three. Woods threw 21 pitches and had 44 total.

TOP 8TH
Brad Halsey came in for Haren. Willie Bloomquist, hitting for Reed, popped foul to Johnson, who made a sliding catch near the bullpen mounds on the right side. Betancourt singled down the leftfield line. Ichiro singled into left as well, doing so on an 0-2 pitch, moving Betancourt to second. Beltre grounded the first pitch to third, nearly starting a 5-4-3 double play (Ichiro was out at second), but he beat it out at first as Betancourt moved to third. Lopez spanked the first pitch into center for a single, scoring Betancourt and moving Beltre to second.
»» ATHLETICS 7, MARINERS 2

GAME 66: ATHLETICS 2, MARINERS 0

AP photo -- Ben Margot

[initial partial post]

In 25 words or less: If you for some reason were asleep during the ninth inning, you missed the most infuriating part of the game.

This one featured Jamie Moyer going up against Joe Blanton. Mark Kotsay came into the game 18-for-30 with a homer against Moyer. Four other hitters in the Oakland lineup also came in with batting averages over .300 against Moyer. Miraculously, Jeremy Reed made his fourth straight start in centerfield. The Mariners looked to make it ten of twelve wins overall. However, the Mariners were to play Oakland. In Oakland. Where they usually suck.

TOP 1ST
Ichiro swiped at a 2-2 pitch, grounding out to second. Adrian Beltre chopped an 0-2 pitch to a charging Crosby at short, who barehanded the ball and threw to first. Jose Lopez whiffed on a 1-2 fastball over the inside corner. Blanton threw 14 pitches.

BOTTOM 1ST
Mark Kotsay popped the second pitch to left. Jason Kendall popped a 2-2 pitch to Betancourt on the infield grass. Eric Chavez flew out high to Beltre on the foul side of the third-base line on the second pitch. Moyer threw nine pitches.

TOP 2ND
Raul Ibañez grounded hard to first on the second pitch. Richie Sexson was up 3-0 before getting under the full-count pitch and flying out high to deep center. Carl Everett rolled a 2-0 pitch up the middle for a single. Kenji Johjima rolled the first pitch to short for a 6-4 force on Everett at second. Blanton threw 12 pitches and had 26 through two.

BOTTOM 2ND
Frank Thomas inadvertently swung and bounced to short, where Betancourt shorthopped it and threw to first. Bobby Crosby walked on a full-count pitch low and away, the eighth pitch of the at-bat. Milton Bradley popped the second pitch high to Lopez on the infield dirt. Nick Swisher popped the second pitch foul down the rightfield line where Lopez slid and had the ball go in and out of his glove. After taking a 2-2 pitch barely inside (a pitch Moyer needs), Swisher knocked a full-count pitch into right for a single, moving Crosby to third. Jay Payton rolled an 0-2 pitch to second for a 4-6 force on Swisher. Moyer threw 24 pitches and had 33 through two.

TOP 3RD
Jeremy Reed was ahead 2-0 and later bounced to first. Yuniesky Betancourt chopped out to third. Ichiro flew out to the track in right on a 3-0 pitch as Bradley got turned around and had to find the ball before catching it. Blanton threw 11 pitches and had 37 through three.

BOTTOM 3RD
Marco Scutaro got ahead 2-0 and eventually ripped a single into left, but his mistake was trying to stretch it into a double and was thrown out by about ten feet (Oakland television crew thought Scutaro may have thought the ball got past Ibañez). Kotsay rolled out to second. Kendall flew out to right. Moyer threw 19 pitches and had 43 through three.

TOP 4TH
Beltre grounded hard to third on the first pitch. Lopez lined out to right on a 1-2 pitch. Ibañez popped the second pitch high to Chavez in foul ground on the right side. Blanton threw nine pitches and had 46 through four.

BOTTOM 4TH
Chavez whiffed on an 0-2 change away. Thomas grounded up the middle to Lopez. Crosby knocked the first pitch down the leftfield line for a double. Bradley popped the first pitch to Reed in shallow center. Moyer threw nine pitches and had 52 through four.

TOP 5TH
Sexson got ahead 2-0 before rolling a 2-2 pitch to short. Everett flew out to Kotsay in shallow center on the first pitch. Johjima popped the second pitch to left. Blanton threw eight pitches and had 54 through five.

BOTTOM 5TH
Swisher tapped a full-count pitch to the mound. Payton got ahead 2-0 before lining a homer just left of the cement staircase behind the leftfield wall. It was his first homer against a lefty this season.
»» ATHLETICS 1, MARINERS 0
Scutaro drilled a 2-0 pitch into left for a single. Kotsay bounced the first pitch past a diving Sexson and into right for a single, moving Scutaro to second. Kendall took an 0-2 fastball across the inside corner. Chavez whiffed on yet another 0-2 change away. Moyer threw 21 pitches and had 73 through five.

TOP 6TH
Reed slapped the second pitch to left, where Payton ran back and reached to make the catch at the track. Betancourt rolled the second pitch to short. Ichiro dug for a 1-2 pitch, but lined to a charging Kotsay in center. Blanton threw eight pitches and had 62 through six.

BOTTOM 6TH
Thomas fell behind 0-2 and popped a 1-2 pitch to the bullpen mounds on the right side, where Sexson had somehwat of a beat on it, but it dropped. Thomas ended up flying out to center on a full count. Crosby took a full-count pitch over the outside corner. Bradley bounced the second pitch to short. Moyer threw 17 pitches and had 90 through six.

TOP 7TH
Beltre took a full-count fastball down the pipe, a tiny bit low if there's any bone about it. Lopez bounced the second pitch to Crosby up the middle, who had the ball go off the end of his glove, but he probably wouldn't have had Lopez anyway. Ibañez popped the second pitch high to Crosby on the outfield grass. Sexson flew out high to right on a 1-2 pitch. Blanton threw 13 pitches and had 75 through seven.

BOTTOM 7TH
Swisher smacked the second pitch through the left side for a single. Payton dumped the second pitch into shallow right for a single, moving Swisher to third. Scutaro walked on a full-count pitch in the dirt to load the bases with nobody out.

George Sherrill came in for Moyer. Kotsay bounced to Sexson at first, who threw home for the force as the bases remained loaded. Kendall knocked a 2-0 pitch into right for a single, scoring Payton and keeping the bases loaded.
»» ATHLETICS 2, MARINERS 0
Chavez grounded the first pitch to second for a 4-6-3 double play.

Moyer's line: 6 innings, 2 runs, 8 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts, 100 pitches (62 strikes)
Sherrill's line: 1 inning, 0 runs, 1 hit, 0 walks, 0 strikeouts, 7 pitches (4 strikes)

TOP 8TH
Everett flew out to center on the second pitch. Johjima shot the second pitch down the leftfield line for a long single after a strong Payton throw from left. Reed was up 3-0 and ended up popping the 3-1 pitch to Kotsay in deep leftcenter. Betancourt popped to Swisher running in foul ground on the right side. Blanton threw 13 pitches and had 88 through eight.

BOTTOM 8TH
Julio Mateo came in for Sherrill. Thomas got ahead 2-0 before dumping a 2-2 pitch into shallow right for a single. Antonio Perez came in to run for Thomas. Crosby flew out to a running Ichiro in rightcenter as Perez threw to first. Bradley grounded to first for a 3-6-3 double play.

Mateo's line: 1 inning, 0 runs, 1 hit, 0 walks, 0 strikeouts, 7 pitches (5 strikes)

TOP 9TH
Ichiro punched a single through the right side. Pitching coach Curt Young came to the mound for a visit. Beltre clubbed the first pitch into the leftfield corner for a double, moving Ichiro to third.

Huston Street came in for Blanton. Lopez took the second pitch off the front of his jersey puffing (think baggy and leaning) over his chest, loading the bases. Ibañez took an 0-2 pitch over the inner half. Sexson whiffed on a 1-2 pitch way outside, failing to check his swing. Everett popped the first pitch to left.

Blanton's line: 8 innings, 0 runs, 5 hits, 0 walks, 2 strikeouts, 92 pitches (61 strikes)
Street's line: 1 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 2 strikeouts, 10 pitches (8 strikes)
---

Gameball: Ichiro.
I guess I couldn't pick Jamie Moyer here since he left the game with the bases loaded and nobody out. As much as I want to see George Sherrill in the game to face more than one hitter, it was just my luck that the one time he faces a righty (second hitter), that hitter (Jason Kendall) puts the second run across for Oakland. What really surprised me was that Hargrove wasn't the usual Hargrove and didn't pull Sherrill immediately after he'd gotten the ground ball from Mark Kotsay. Then again, the righty he had warming up in the bullpen at that point was Julio Mateo instead of, say, Rafael Soriano, who I would have loved to send up in that situation. Still, this whole paragraph is supposed to somehow relate to Ichiro. Ichiro didn't strike out. He didn't leave anyone on the basepaths. Oddly, his only hit was the one that led off the ninth and was the first of three plays that loaded the bases with nobody out for the Mariners before the middle third of the Mariner lineup did absolutely nothing, not even mustering as much as a fly ball until there were already two out, i.e., Ibañez and Sexson didn't put the ball in play.

Goat: Raul Ibañez.
It'd be way easier to harp on Sexson here, but I won't. Ibañez was up with the bases loaded and nobody out in the ninth, and he fouled off two pitches before taking the third over the inside corner from Huston Street, who had just come in from the bullpen. Street's tough, sure, but Ibañez is also the number-four hitter and the team relies on him to be a consistent hitter. It's hard to harp on him for having a .342 June thus far, but he's 2-for-16 (.125) the past four games. Of course, it's weird when you consider the two hits were home runs. In that aspect, his game log lately looks a lot like Sexson's, except not quite as sharply. Sexson has nine hits this month, but four are homers and one is a double. He has 13 RBIs in June with the nine hits. Back to Ibañez, though, the 2-for-16 stretch contains two hitless games which are his only hitless games of the month. The Saturday game in Anaheim broke his eight-game hitting streak. On an odd note, Ibañez had a .301 May and had a .237 June, though it kinda didn't seem like it. He had hitting streaks of seven, six, and three games, and he had nine hitless games. Anyway, with the bases loaded and nobody out in this game, they needed him.

GAME 65: MARINERS 6, ANGELS 2

AP photo -- Ric Francis

[initial partial post]

In 25 words or less: If you saw this one, you're glad you did, and if you didn't, you're kicking yourself. Felix was absolutely dealing.

This one featured Felix Hernandez going up against Jeff Weaver. Raul Ibañez came in 13-for-31 against Weaver with 2 doubles and a homer. A win here would give the Mariners nine wins in eleven games. Needless to say, that's by far the Mariners' best stretch of the season. A win would put the Mariners three games under .500, where they haven't been since they were 12-15 after their game on May 1st, an 8-2 win at the Metrodome. The last time they were two games over .500? After the game on April 19th, a 9-6 win against the Rangers where they came back from being down 6-1 and Carl Everett walked off righthanded in the ninth. The point is, the Mariners haven't been this high in the water in quite a while.

TOP 1ST
Ichiro punched a single through the right side. Adrian Beltre flew out to Anderson in leftcenter on the second pitch. Jose Lopez fell behind 0-2 and whiffed on a 1-2 fastball away. Raul Ibañez whiffed on a 2-2 breaking ball down and away. Weaver threw 17 pitches.

BOTTOM 1ST
Chone Figgins punched the second pitch past Sexson along the rightfield line, where Ichiro went over to field it, but had it hit his foot (his first error of the year), and Figgins scooted to second. Orlando Cabrera took the first pitch and it went off R Rivera's glove and off the wrist of plate umpire Brian O'Nora, enabling Figgins to move to third. Cabrera singled a 2-0 pitch through the left side, scoring Figgins.
»» ANGELS 1, MARINERS 0
Vladimir Guerrero popped a ball along the rightfield line, where Lopez raced over and made the sliding catch (the defense was played to pull). Garret Anderson didn't have a pitch thrown to him when Hernandez got an alert to step off and ran at Cabrera off of first, and they got him into a rundown to erase him from the bases. Anderson bounced out to first. Hernandez threw 11 pitches.

TOP 2ND
Richie Sexson was jammed and flew out to center. Carl Everett whiffed on a 1-2 pitch. Jeremy Reed crushed a 2-0 pitch over the wall in rightfield between the rightfield bleachers and the seats just inside the line (probably where they store the cage for batting practice).
»» ANGELS 1, MARINERS 1
Rene Rivera exhibited some warning-track power, riding a 1-2 pitch to a running Anderson on the track in leftcenter. Weaver threw 15 pitches and had 32 through two.

BOTTOM 2ND
Kendry Morales drove a 1-2 pitch to deep left, but Ibañez made an over-the-shoulder catch just short of the track. Juan Rivera lined the second pitch right to Betancourt at short. Dallas McPherson grounded an 0-2 pitch to first. Hernandez threw 11 pitches and had 22 through two.

TOP 3RD
Yuniesky Betancourt lined out to second. Ichiro chopped to first on a 3-1 pitch. Beltre flew out short of the rightfield track on a full count. Weaver threw 16 pitches and had 48 through three.

BOTTOM 3RD
Jose Molina whiffed on a 2-2 breaking ball outside that got away from R Rivera (2-3 putout). Adam Kennedy grounded a 1-2 pitch to second. Figgins took an 0-2 fastball over the inner half. Hernandez threw 16 pitches and had 38 through three.

TOP 4TH
Lopez tapped a 2-2 pitch that went off of Weaver and ricocheted toward short, where Cabrera had no play. Ibañez whiffed on a 2-1 pitch and Molina nearly picked Lopez off of first, and replay showed he was probably out. Nonetheless, Ibañez ended up grounding to second on a full count as Lopez made it to second since he took off with the pitch. Sexson took a 1-2 pitch outside that Weaver really wanted, and he stood there in front of the mound for a second in silent protest. Sexson whiffed on an offspeed pitch over the outside corner on the next pitch. Everett flew out to Cabrera in shallow center. Weaver threw 20 pitches and had 68 through four.

BOTTOM 4TH
Cabrera whiffed on a 1-2 curve. Guerrero bounced the second pitch to short. Anderson popped the first pitch to left. Hernandez threw seven pitches and had 45 through four.

TOP 5TH
Reed drove a 2-2 pitch off the wall in leftcenter for a double. R Rivera grounded the first pitch into the hole at short, where Cabrera booted it and corraled it, but had no play. Betancourt bunted a 1-2 pitch out in front where Weaver looked to third and tried to gather to throw to first, but muffed the transfer (error) and the bases were now loaded. Ichiro tapped a 1-1 pitch up the middle that went off of Weaver's glove and behind the mound, scoring Reed and keeping the bases loaded.
»» MARINERS 2, ANGELS 1
Beltre dropped the first pitch into shallow left for a single, scoring R Rivera and Betancourt and moving Ichiro to second. Pitching coach Bud Black came to the mound for a visit.
»» MARINERS 4, ANGELS 1
Lopez popped the second pitch to Kennedy in shallow right. Ibañez flew out to Anderson near the track in left on a 2-2 pitch, and the runners held again. Sexson flew out near the rightfield corner on the first pitch. Weaver threw 22 pitches and had 90 through five.

BOTTOM 5TH
Morales popped the first pitch to shallow right. J Rivera whiffed on an 0-2 pitch inside. McPherson whiffed at a 1-2 breaking ball in the dirt. Hernandez threw eight pitches and had 53 through five.

TOP 6TH
Everett was down 0-2 and shoveled a 2-2 pitch into shallow center for a single. Reed took the second pitch to the track in left. R Rivera worked an 0-2 count for a walk, moving Everett to second. Betancourt foul-tipped a 1-2 curve into Molina's glove.

JC Romero came in for Weaver. Ichiro was ahead 3-1 before flying out to Anderson in shallow left on a full count.

Weaver's line: 5 2/3 innings, 4 runs (2 earned), 7 hits, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts, 108 pitches (69 strikes)
Romero's line: 1/3 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 0 strikeouts, 7 pitches (4 strikes)

BOTTOM 6TH
Molina took a second-pitch strike for which he took umbrage with the plate umpire. Molina grounded the 0-2 pitch to short. Kennedy popped the second pitch to center. Figgins got ahead 2-0 and ended up flying out to center. Hernandez threw nine pitches and had 62 through six.

TOP 7TH
Hector Carrasco came in for Romero. Beltre flew out very high to the leftfield line to Anderson on the first pitch. Lopez grounded to third, where McPherson got the ball behind the bag, but his momentum took him away too much and Lopez beat out the throw. Ibañez took an 0-2 pitch that got past Molina (passed ball) and to the backstop, moving Lopez to second. Ibañez ended up cranking a 1-2 pitch about five rows above the out-of-town scoreboard in right, scoring Lopez.
»» MARINERS 6, ANGELS 1
Sexson whiffed on an 0-2 breaking ball. Everett whiffed on an 0-2 breaking ball. Carrasco threw 16 pitches.

BOTTOM 7TH
Cabrera rocked the first pitch off the track and wall in leftcenter, snapping Hernandez' streak of 17 straight retired hitters, and the first hit since Cabrera's hit in the first inning. Guerrero hit a first-pitch curve off the end of the bat, taking Reed to the track in center, but Cabrera tagged and went to third. Anderson popped the second pitch to shallow left, and Ibañez came up throwing, and the play ended up a whole lot closer than I thought it'd be, though Cabrera was called safe. R Rivera had the plate blocked, but not before Cabrera had slid under him and to the plate.
»» MARINERS 6, ANGELS 2
Morales flew out high to Beltre on the infield on the first pitch. Hernandez threw five pitches and had 67 through seven.

TOP 8TH
Reed was hit in the jersey with a 1-2 pitch, not the first brushback-like pitch he took in the at-bat. Black visited the mound again. R Rivera bounced an 0-2 pitch to first, moving Reed to second. Betancourt took an 0-2 fastball over the outer half. Ichiro was intentionally walked. Beltre flew out to Kennedy in shallow right on the second pitch.

Carrasco's line: 2 innings, 2 runs, 2 hits, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts, 32 pitches (23 strikes)

BOTTOM 8TH
J Rivera worked a 1-2 count full before taking heat down the pipe. McPherson worked a 1-2 count full before whiffing on a massive curve. Mike Napoli, hitting for Molina, was down 0-2 and took a 1-2 curve over the inner half. Hernandez threw 17 pitches and had 84 through eight.

TOP 9TH
Scot Shields came in for Carrasco and Napoli came in to catch. Lopez took the first pitch to the wall in leftcenter for a double. Ibañez tapped the second pitch back to the mound, and Shields looked Lopez back to second before throwing to first. Sexson bounced the second pitch to first (3-1 putout), moving Lopez to third. Everett lined the second pitch to first.

Shields' line: 1 inning, 0 runs, 1 hit, 0 walks, 0 strikeouts, 7 pitches (6 strikes)

BOTTOM 9TH
Kennedy rolled an 0-2 pitch to short. Figgins whiffed on an 0-2 curve down and in. Cabrera banged the second pitch up the middle for a single. Guerrero chopped the first pitch to short.

Hernandez' line: 9 innings, 2 runs, 4 hits, 0 walks, 9 strikeouts, 94 pitches (73 strikes)

Gameball: Felix Hernandez.
The first inning started out a bit rocky, and I thought we'd be in for more of the same from him, which would make watching the Angels' feed all the more excruciating since Rex Hudler just refuses to give him his due. Luckily, the "he's gotta his fastball" and other not-so-fast kind of rumors had to trail off after Felix went and retired 17 straight hitters and after Steve Physioc started pointing out such facts. It was just so refreshing to see it go the other way for once -- usually it's the Mariners who are facing some random pitcher that's on his game, then they start swinging at absolutely everything and said pitcher never gets out of the game because his pitch count is horribly low. Today, Felix had the fastball working and the curve working, hitting his spots, etc. It was just magnificent. About the only thing he didn't do was strike out ten guys. That almost takes a back seat to the fact that he didn't walk anybody. The only guy that could really hit him was Orlando Cabrera, who went 3-for-4. Chone Figgins got the only other hit. Of course, one other thing about this outing that I'm sure people have pointed out already -- Rene Rivera was catching, not Kenji Johjima. I know it was a day game after a night game, but if you gotta punt one spot out of nine in the lineup so that Felix can feel more comfortable on the mound, I say you do it. It'd give Rivera some worth on the team and give Johjima a bit more rest, as in every five days instead of six.

Goat: Richie Sexson.
He and Yuniesky Betancourt were the only hitless Mariners in this game. Sexson, however, was 0-for-5 with two strikeouts. On a day like this, somebody still has to be the goat, and he's the clearest one. No monstrous errors or anything like that, no too-brutal at-bats in clutch situations. He had a runner on second in the fourth with one out and struck out. In the fifth, the Mariners had the bases loaded and nobody out before Beltre drove two runs home. At that point, the Mariners had runners on first and second with nobody out, but Lopez, Ibañez, and Sexson all failed to advance anyone. Still, it's games like Saturday that make Sexson worth the while, what with the grand slam and everything. The fact that he's incredibly tall also helps Lopez, Betancourt, and Beltre have all that much more target to throw at when throwing to first. There's a few of those great plays they make when the throws are a bit wide and Sexson has to pick 'em. All told, Sexson is hitting a brutal .207, but he's only eight RBIs behind Jose Lopez, who has 50 for the team lead. What happens when Sexson warms up and hits closer to his usual .250-.260 range?

GAME 64: MARINERS 12, ANGELS 6

AP photo -- Francis Specker

[initial partial post]

In 25 words or less: Something's seriously wrong with this team, and especially the offense in this one. It's situation normal with Gil Meche though.

This one featured Gil Meche going up against John Lackey. The Mariners had won seven of nine and looked to make it eight of ten, though with Meche on the hill, it looked like a bit of a treacherous proposition. Little did any of us know that Lackey wasn't going to pitch like anyone that may have once been a Game 7 starter in the World Series. He pitched like it was the seventh game of spring training.

TOP 1ST
Ichiro was jammed on a 2-2 pitch and tapped back to the mound. Adrian Beltre rolled an 0-2 pitch to short. Jose Lopez popped to right on a 2-0 pitch. Lackey threw 13 pitches.

BOTTOM 1ST
Chone Figgins worked a 1-2 count for a walk. Orlando Cabrera worked an 0-2 count before flying out to right on a full count. Vladimir Guerrero took the second pitch for a strike, and Johjima was able to gun down Figgins at second. Guerrero was down 0-2 before doubling to the rightfield wall on a 2-2 pitch. Garret Anderson flew out high to Ichiro in shallow right on the first pitch. Meche threw 20 pitches.

TOP 2ND
Raul Ibañez popped to right on the second pitch. Richie Sexson drove a full-count pitch to the track in right, where Guerrero went back for it and made an awkward leaping catch as only he or Manny Ramirez can do. Carl Everett rolled a 1-2 pitch to second. Lackey threw 12 pitches and had 25 through two.

BOTTOM 2ND
Kendry Morales was up 2-0 and rolled a 2-2 pitch up the middle to Betancourt, who dove but couldn't get a grip on it soon enough to gun in time from his seat, and his belt broke on the play. Juan Rivera popped the second pitch to shallow center for a single between Lopez and Reed, moving Morales to second. Dallas McPherson, whose first career homer came off of Meche, was up 2-0 and popped to right as the runners held (Ichiro). Mike Napoli popped the second pitch to Ibañez near the track in left. Adam Kennedy fell behind 0-2 and punched a 2-2 pitch through the right side for a single, scoring Morales and moving Rivera to second.
»» ANGELS 1, MARINERS 0
Figgins ripped a single through the left side to score Rivera and move Kennedy to third.
»» ANGELS 2, MARINERS 0
Cabrera was up 3-1 and walked on a full count, moving Figgins to second. Guerrero ripped a 1-1 pitch foul that nearly bludgeoned Kennedy, the runner at third. Guerrero ended up flying out to right on a 1-2 pitch. Meche threw 33 pitches and had 53 through two.

TOP 3RD
Kenji Johjima singled into center on the second pitch. Jeremy Reed looped a 1-2 broken-bat single into shallow right, moving Johjima to second, though he probably would have had third easily on the play. Yuniesky Betancourt rode the first pitch to the wall in rightcenter for a double, scoring Johjima and moving Betancourt to third.
»» ANGELS 2, MARINERS 1
Ichiro grounded to first, where Morales threw straight home and Reed was run back to third, where Betancourt had already advanced (Betancourt was called out). Beltre couldn't check his swing on a 1-2 breaking ball way the hell out of the zone down and away. Lopez doubled the second pitch off the track and wall in left in front of the bullpen, scoring Reed and Ichiro.
»» MARINERS 3, ANGELS 2
Ibañez popped to center on the first pitch. Lackey threw 20 pitches and had 45 through three.

BOTTOM 3RD
Anderson popped a 1-2 pitch to center. Morales whiffed on a 1-2 pitch. Rivera worked an 0-2 count for a walk. McPherson ripped a 1-2 pitch into right for a single, moving Rivera to third as the Angels' TV crew wondered why McPherson got four straight fastballs and no curves. Napoli worked a 1-2 count full before foul-tipping strike three into Johjima's glove. Meche threw 26 pitches and had 79 through three.

TOP 4TH
Sexson walked on a full count, taking nine pitches to get there. Everett popped to Napoli near the screen behind the plate on the first pitch. Johjima chopped the second pitch to third, moving Sexson over to second. Reed walked on four pitches. Betancourt grounded to the hole at short, where Cabrera beat Betancourt to first with the throw. Lackey threw 19 pitches and had 64 through four.

BOTTOM 4TH
Kennedy popped to Betancourt on the outfield grass. Figgins lined the second pitch to short. Cabrera drove a 2-0 pitch to center, where Reed made a leaping catch and crashed into the wall, good for the #1 Web Gem on Baseball Tonight. Meche threw eight pitches and had 87 through four.

TOP 5TH
Ichiro knocked a single through the middle. Beltre got under a hanging curve, flying out to Rivera just short of the track in left. Lopez dropped a base hit along the rightfield line to move Ichiro to third, but Lopez was able to take second on the play thanks to some not-so-sound defense throwingwise by Guerrero. Ibañez was intentionally walked to load the bases. Sexson crushed a ball over the centerfield wall and opened a new branch of Phi Slamma Jamma, except no college is involved and I'm really reaching.
»» MARINERS 7, ANGELS 2
Everett looped an 0-2 pitch over Cabrera at short for a single. Johjima nubbed a 1-2 pitch back to Lackey as Everett moved to second. Reed was up 2-0 and dropped a single in front of Figgins, who trapped it, and the single scored Everett.
»» MARINERS 8, ANGELS 2

Kevin Gregg came in for Lackey. Betancourt lined the first pitch to Rivera in left. Gregg threw one pitch.

Lackey's line: 4 2/3 innings, 8 runs, 9 hits, 3 walks, 1 strikeout, 93 pitches (57 strikes)

BOTTOM 5TH
Guerrero drove the first pitch to Reed short of the centerfield track. Anderson dropped a base hit down the leftfield line, and he beat the Ibañez throw to second for a double. Morales took the first pitch, a curveball that visibly crossed up Johjima. Morales walked on a 3-1 pitch. Rivera was down 0-2 and foul-tipped a 1-2 curve into Johjima's glove. McPherson flew out to center on the first pitch.

Meche's line: 5 innings, 2 runs, 7 hits, 4 walks, 3 strikeouts, 102 pitches (59 strikes)

TOP 6TH
Ichiro doubled a 2-2 pitch down the leftfield line. Beltre poked a 1-2 pitch into shallow center for a single, moving Ichiro to third. Lopez popped high to Morales near the mound on a 3-1 pitch. Ibañez looped a fly ball into shallow center that was caught by Figgins as Ichiro held at third. Sexson whiffed on a 2-2 fastball down and away. Gregg threw 23 pitches and had 24 total.

BOTTOM 6TH
Emiliano Fruto came in for Meche. Napoli was up 3-0 and cranked the full-count pitch out of the yard to left.
»» MARINERS 8, ANGELS 3
Kennedy slapped the second pitch into left for a single. Figgins poked an 0-2 pitch into center for a single, moving Kennedy to second. Cabrera whiffed on a 1-2 pitch. Guerrero whiffed on a 2-2 pitch. Anderson was up 2-0 and bounced to first on a full count. Fruto threw 26 pitches.

TOP 7TH
Everett was ahead 2-0 and wound up flying out to left. Johjima ripped a 2-0 pitch down the leftfield line for a double. Reed got ahead 3-0 before walking on a 3-1 pitch down and away. Betancourt singled through the left side, and for the second straight day, a runner sent home from third was out by a mile, and this time it was Johjima, who never got within five feet of the plate due to a good throw and block as Reed went to second. Ichiro roped a 2-2 up-and-in pitch over the out-of-town scoreboard in rightfield, scoring Reed and Betancourt.
»» MARINERS 11, ANGELS 3
Beltre rocked the second pitch over the scoreboard in right as well. Opposite field stuff there.
»» MARINERS 12, ANGELS 3
Lopez rolled the first pitch to third. Gregg threw 24 pitches and had 48 total.

BOTTOM 7TH
Morales fell behind 0-2 and whiffed on a 1-2 offspeed pitch. Rivera got ahead 2-0 before singling into right. McPherson was down 0-2 and took a 2-2 breaking ball over the inside corner. Napoli cranked a 2-0 pitch into the bullpens in left, scoring Rivera. He's got Fruto's number, I guess.
»» MARINERS 12, ANGELS 5
Kennedy singled into center on the first pitch. Figgins knocked an 0-2 pitch into right for a single, moving Kennedy to second.

Julio Mateo came in for Fruto. Cabrera grounded the second pitch to third, where Beltre stepped on the bag for the force. Mateo threw two pitches.

Fruto's line: 1 2/3 innings, 3 runs, 7 hits, 0 walks, 4 strikeouts, 47 pitches (31 strikes)

TOP 8TH
JC Romero came in for Gregg, Maicer Izturis came in to play short, and Tommy Murphy came in to play right. Ibañez grounded the second pitch to second. Sexson whiffed on a 2-2 pitch. Everett worked a 1-2 count for a walk. Johjima ripped a 3-1 pitch down the leftfield line for a double, moving Everett to third. Reed whiffed on an 0-2 pitch.

Romero's line: 1 inning, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts, 22 pitches (13 strikes)

BOTTOM 8TH
Willie Bloomquist came in to play third. Murphy roped the second pitch down the rightfield line and got a triple out of it. Anderson knocked the first pitch into left for a single, scoring Murphy immediately.
»» MARINERS 12, ANGELS 6
Morales rolled to third to start a 5-4-3 double play. Rivera was down 0-2 and flew out to Lopez in shallow right on the 1-2 pitch. Mateo threw ten pitches and had 12 total.

Mateo's line: 1 1/3 innings, 1 run, 2 hits, 0 walks, 0 strikeouts, 12 pitches (8 strikes)

TOP 9TH
Francisco Rodriguez came in for Romero. Betancourt popped to Morales in foul ground on the right side. Ichiro rolled the second pitch to first, where Morales bobbled it (error), giving Ichiro just enough time to beat out Morales' shovel throw to Rodriguez, though I think he might have been out. Bloomquist took a 2-2 slider over the outside corner. Lopez had the hitters' counts and took a full-count fastball over the outside corner.

Rodriguez' line: 1 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 2 strikeouts, 17 pitches (11 strikes)

BOTTOM 9TH
Eddie Guardado came in for Mateo and Roberto Petagine came in to play first. McPherson rolled the second pitch into the hole on the right side and was robbed of a single by a sliding stop by Lopez. Napoli flew out to Lopez in shallow right. Jose Molina, hitting for Kennedy, popped to Reed on the track in rightcenter on a full count and on the tenth pitch of the at-bat.

Guardado's line: 1 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 0 strikeouts, 15 pitches (11 strikes)
---

Gameball: Jeremy Reed.
He needed a game like this in the worst way. He was 3-for-19 in the month of June before this game, but he chipped away at that ugliness with a 2-for-3 game, driving in a run and walking twice. Getting on base four times bumped his on-base percentage by .018 to .275. Getting two hits bumped his batting average to .227, ten points higher than before the game. It wasn't just his day at the plate that was great, though. He hasn't been too hot at the plate most of this year, sure, but his worth playing in centerfield can't be understated. I know I root hard for him because I'm convinced he'll get rolling at the plate, but it's plays like the leaping catch at the wall on the Orlando Cabrera fly ball that really make me glad the Mariners have that guy, and really make me ticked off that Hargrove benches him every time a lefthanded starting pitcher takes the mound for the opposition. I know the guy doesn't have a hit against a lefty this season, but he's barely had any chances either. I did mention that the catch play was the #1 Web Gem on Baseball Tonight, and between Reed, Ichiro, Beltre, Betancourt, and Lopez, the team manages to get into that nightly Top 5 quite a lot. Also, with catches like this by Reed, I'm not saying he's as good as Cameron or as Griffey was, but it's another solid centerfielder out there for the Mariners.

Goat: Gil Meche.
Sigh... I still can't believe he won this game. Both he and John Lackey weren't great in the first few innings, but Meche was worse. His first three innings were absolutely brutal. His threw 20, 33, and 26 pitches in first, second, and third innings. Yes, that math adds up to 79 pitches through three innings. He threw 23 pitches over the next two innings, which was a bit more humane. Luckily for Meche, it was the fourth and fifth innings that got him the win. Okay, it was that and a combination of the Angels not getting timely hits; both teams had 16 hits apiece in the game, but the Mariners doubled up the Angels in the run column. Anyway, Meche's struggles forced the hand of the bullpen, who had to finish out the remaining four innings with a combination of freshly called up Emiliano Fruto, Julio Mateo, and Eddie Guardado. The Mariners had used George Sherrill, Rafael Soriano, and JJ Putz the night before. Of course, what helped the Mariner bullpen's chances was the Thursday outing of Jake Woods, who threw 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball after Piñeiro left (we'll pretend that we'll blame Piñeiro for his two runs that scored with Woods on the mound).
