[initial partial post]

In 25 words or less: It's nice to know that going to Oakland has turned into a regular trip of horrors for the Mariners again.

This one featured Joel Piñeiro going up against Dan Haren. The Mariners were hoping to keep from having a losing streak after that stretch where they won nine of eleven and had a small three-game winning streak snapped. Of course, Piñeiro is Piñeiro and Oakland is Oakland, so...

TOP 1ST
Ichiro put a highish full-count pitch into center for a single. Adrian Beltre solidly lined a single into center that one-hopped a sliding catch attempt by Kotsay, moving Ichiro to second. Jose Lopez bounced a ball to third that ate up Chavez (no error was given on the play) and loaded the bases with nobody out. Raul Ibañez grounded a 2-2 pitch to second to start a 4-6-3 double play, scoring Ichiro and moving Beltre to second.
»» MARINERS 1, ATHLETICS 0
Richie Sexson whiffed on a 2-2 offspeed pitch. Haren threw 23 pitches.

BOTTOM 1ST
Mark Kotsay was ahead 3-1 before flying out to left on a full count. Nick Swisher flew out to Ibañez in leftcenter on the second pitch. Eric Chavez rolled the first pitch to short. Piñeiro threw ten pitches.

TOP 2ND
Carl Everett worked a 1-2 count full before singling through the right side (Kendall behind the plate was cupchecked on the foul-off of a 1-2 pitch). Kenji Johjima rolled to short for a 6-4 fielder's choice to force out Everett. Jeremy Reed rolled the first pitch to short for a 6 unassisted fielder's choice since Reed beat out the double play on the back end. Yuniesky Betancourt fell behind 0-2 before whiffing on a 1-2 pitch outside in the dirt (2-3 putout). Haren threw 13 pitches and had 36 through two.

BOTTOM 2ND
Frank Thomas was plunked on the left thigh. Bobby Crosby rolled a 2-0 pitch to third, where Beltre gloved it but had it go up into the air on him, and tried to throw to first, though he could have had the slow Thomas easily at second. Dan Johnson bounced to first for a 3-6 force on Crosby, moving Thomas to third. Bobby Kielty chopped the first pitch to first for the same play as the one previous, forcing out Johnson at second, except Thomas held at third. Jason Kendall fell behind 0-2 before putting the barrel on a 1-2 hanging breaking ball, driving it to left, but Ibañez dove for it and missed as it rolled to the wall, scoring Thomas and Kielty. Kendall got a double out of it.
»» ATHLETICS 2, MARINERS 1
Marco Scutaro was ahead 3-0 and grounded hard to third on a 3-1 pitch. Piñeiro threw 22 pitches and had 32 through two.

TOP 3RD
Ichiro walked on a 3-1 pitch outside. Beltre swung at a high first pitch and popped foul to Chavez. Lopez fouled off seven pitches (fouled one off his front foot as well) before failing to check his swing on the eighth, a ball down in the dirt away. Ibañez whiffed on a 2-2 pitch. Haren threw 20 pitches and had 56 through three.

BOTTOM 3RD
Kotsay flew out to Reed at the track in center on the second pitch. Swisher rolled out to second on the second pitch. Chavez walked on four pitches. Thomas rocked a 2-2 pitch off the wall in left, scoring Chavez. Thomas came up a bit lame on the play, and Milton Bradley came in to run for him as he only got to first.
»» ATHLETICS 3, MARINERS 1
Crosby rolled the second pitch to third. Piñeiro threw 15 pitches and had 47 through three.

TOP 4TH
Sexson rolled a 2-0 pitch hard to third. Everett was ahead 3-0 before flying out to left on a full count. Johjima lined out to center on a 2-2 pitch. Haren threw 14 pitches and had 70 through four.

BOTTOM 4TH
Johnson rolled a 3-1 pitch into the rightfield corner for a double. Kielty fell behind 0-2 and roped a 1-2 pitch to the wall in rightfield for a double, scoring Johnson.
»» ATHLETICS 4, MARINERS 1
Kendall slowly rolled a 2-2 pitch to short, moving Kielty to third. Scutaro flew out to shallow right. Kotsay lined the second pitch into right for a single to score Kielty.
»» ATHLETICS 5, MARINERS 1
Swisher fell behind 0-2 and fouled off two pitches before watching a ball, but Kotsay was thrown out on that pitch trying to steal second. Piñeiro threw 26 pitches and had 73 through four.

TOP 5TH
Reed lined out to left on the second pitch. Betancourt drove the second pitch a few strides short of the warning track in center where it was caught by Kotsay. Ichiro grounded out hard to short on an 0-2 pitch, partly thanks to a nice pick by Crosby. Haren threw seven pitches and had 77 through five.

BOTTOM 5TH
Swisher walked on four pitches. Chavez got ahead 3-0 and singled along the rightfield line on a 3-1 pitch, moving Swisher to third.

Jake Woods came in for Piñeiro. Bradley was ahead 3-1 and walked on a full-count pitch up and away, though Lopez had to block a short throw to second by Johjima in case it wasn't ball four. All told, the bases were now loaded. Crosby was up 2-0 before whiffing on a 2-2 inside fastball. Johnson drove the second pitch to Reed running to the wall in leftcenter, scoring Swisher.
»» ATHLETICS 6, MARINERS 1
Kielty dropped the first pitch in front of Reed in center for a single to score Chavez and move Bradley to third.
»» ATHLETICS 7, MARINERS 1
Kendall bounced a 2-0 pitch to second. Woods threw 17 pitches.

Piñeiro's line: 4 innings, 7 runs (5 earned), 6 hits, 2 walks, 0 strikeouts, 82 pitches (47 strikes)

TOP 6TH
Beltre lined to a leaping Swisher in left. Lopez fell behind 0-2 and popped a 1-2 pitch to Kendall reaching over a rail in front of a camera well on the right side. Ibañez flew out to left on a 2-2 pitch and was the 12th straight Mariner to be set down by Haren. Haren threw 14 pitches and had 91 through six.

BOTTOM 6TH
Scutaro flew out to Reed on the track in leftcenter. Kotsay rolled a single up the middle on the second pitch. Swisher grounded the second pitch hard to first, where Beltre made did a spin move to start a 5-4-3 double play. Woods threw seven pitches and had 23 total.

TOP 7TH
Sexson walked on a 3-1 pitch. Everett rode a 1-2 pitch just short of the centerfield track for an out. Johjima chopped to Scutaro, who ran at Sexson coming down the line, but he tried to retreat back to first, and Scutaro tossed to first, where Johnson tagged the bag and tagged Sexson.

Haren's line: 7 innings, 1 run, 4 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts, 104 pitches (67 strikes)

BOTTOM 7TH
Chavez took a 2-2 pitch over the outside corner for strike three. Bradley grounded out to short. Crosby walked on a full count. Johnson was down 1-2 and took a 2-2 over the outside corner for strike three. Woods threw 21 pitches and had 44 total.

TOP 8TH
Brad Halsey came in for Haren. Willie Bloomquist, hitting for Reed, popped foul to Johnson, who made a sliding catch near the bullpen mounds on the right side. Betancourt singled down the leftfield line. Ichiro singled into left as well, doing so on an 0-2 pitch, moving Betancourt to second. Beltre grounded the first pitch to third, nearly starting a 5-4-3 double play (Ichiro was out at second), but he beat it out at first as Betancourt moved to third. Lopez spanked the first pitch into center for a single, scoring Betancourt and moving Beltre to second.
»» ATHLETICS 7, MARINERS 2

Woods' line: 4 innings, 0 runs, 3 hits, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts, 59 pitches (33 strikes)

TOP 9TH
