MOLASSES

Man, this one's short. I got it done by 1am. Crazy. Of course, we haven't been getting too many days in which no articles have popped up for the Mariners or Seahawks. Today is that day.

On to the post...

MARINERS
Behold today's Mariner of yesteryear...Erik Plantenberg. I've got this guy's rookie card stashed away somewhere. After he broke in with the Mariners, he eventually wore number 12, if memory serves me right. I think it was after the Mariners cut O'Brien (previous wearer of the number 12) loose on July 21st of the 1993 season. It checks out too because Plantenberg's first day pitching for the Mariners was on July 31st. How do I remember such weird things like Plantenberg wearing 12? Photographic memory. I'm good with license plates too. Don't cut me off in traffic.

SEAHAWKS
Today's Seahawk of yesteryear...Keith Millard.

BASKETBALL
The Marvin Williams Watch
Bremerton 2004 grad Marvin Williams and the Tar Heels play at Virginia on Saturday (9a, ESPN).

Huskies
'Twas a slow-paced game as the Huskies came away with a 66-48 win. The 66 Husky points totalled their lowest amount for the season and it was 23 points below their season average. Nate Robinson was the high scorer with 13 in a game where the Huskies shot 35.9 percent.

The Huskies go to Arizona on Thursday (5:30p, FSNNW) and Arizona State on Sunday (12:45p, CBS)

Bulldogs
The Zags are home against the Portland Pilots on Saturday (8p, ESPN2)

Sonics
For my take on last night's game, scroll down a post or click here if you're in the archive.

Yes, the whistles were out last night to the tune of 70 personal fouls (38 on Utah) and eight technical fouls. Rashard Lewis also went off, and he's doing much better against the Jazz this year than the past two seasons. The Jazz also stuck Andrei Kirilenko mostly on Vladimir Radmanovic for his 14 minutes, which probably prevented him from scoring more than the 12 he ended up with. Lewis was able to match up against Matt Harpring, which was probably more favorable.

In disturbing news, most people scattered out of KeyArena quickly after a bomb threat was phoned into the Center House.

This short notebook piece by Jayda Evans seemed like it was completely written before the game or after the Minnesota game. Either way, the Sonics weren't moving the ball well in the Minnesota game but moved it a lot better last night. This helped get the Sonics some better looks at the basket, and in turn a better shooting percentage. The fact that the Sonics were pretty hot shooters last night helped too.

Upcoming...
Tuesday at Lakers (7:30p, FSNNW)
Wednesday at Utah (6p, FSNNW)
Friday at Golden State (7:30p, FSNNW)

HOCKEY
It's news to no one, but any chances of a 2005 NHL season are pretty much shot, and key players' union members Trevor Linden and Vincent Damphousse pretty much echoed that sentiment. In Linden's words, "This is a critical point. If it goes past this, it could go on for a year from now. It's Gary's lockout and we can only do so much."

As for seasons that actually are taking place...
Portland beat Vancouver 5-2. Dustin Butler stopped 15 of Vancouver's 16 first period shots, which was no small factor in the Winter Hawks' win. Brandon Dubinsky opened the scoring by banking one in off of the skate of Vancouver goalie Marek Schwarz. Brian Woolger pounced on a rebound very early in the second period to get Portland a 2-0 lead and Darrell May beat Schwarz a little over four minutes later to get Portland a 3-0 lead. Gilbert Brule redirected a point shot for Vancouver's first goal in the second period, and the Giants managed another goal in the third period from Adam Courchaine after they pulled Schwarz for an extra skater. But Portland later scored twice into the empty net (including another Woolger goal), sealing it. Vancouver outshot Portland 31-29. Marek Schwarz stopped 26 for the Giants, and Dustin Butler stopped 29 for the Winter Hawks.

Manitoba beat Edmonton 3-1. The Moose got behind early in the second period but scored the final three goals to come away with the win. The Moose had to kill off a two-man advantage after Edmonton had their 1-0 lead. Nolan Baumgartner tied the game on the power play halfway through the second period before Ryan Kesler got the game-winner early in the third and Jimmy Roy added the icing on the cake late in the period. Manitoba outshot Edmonton 34-27. Alex Auld stopped 26 for the Moose.
