DECISIONS
It's Sunday already. I heard there were some football games being televised today. If you really hate football, you can watch the hardwood version of the Apple Cup instead of the NFC title game. You could also skip out on the end of the AFC title game and watch the Sonics. Have it your way.
It won't fit anywhere else, but it's no less important...Bremerton's Dana Kirk swept the 100 and 200 fly for the second day in a row as Stanford knocked off previously unbeaten Arizona 165-135. Dana also was on the victorious medley relay team for the second straight day. Her times in the butterfly events were 55.02 and 1:58.60, respectively. Stanford has home meets Friday against UCLA and Saturday against USC.
The Sun tipped me off to this one yesterday, but the DartSwim site has put together a screensaver featuring a bunch of the Team USA swimmers, including Tara Kirk. There's two displayed photos per swimmer, though I could swear the second photo in the Tara Kirk set is of her aforementioned younger sister. The font used on the screensaver looks like an italicized version of Matt Groening's writing on The Simpons. The DartSwim or DartFish names may be familiar to some -- they were prominently featured on FSNNW telecasts for the Mariners and Sonics this past year capturing certain frames of projectile flight, whether it was the ball rotation on Ray Allen's jumpshot or the different looping arcs from Jamie Moyer's pitches. Anyway, if you feel like downloading the screensaver, it's 22 megabytes.
On TV today -- Cougars at Huskies (1p, FSNNW), Jazz at SuperSonics (6p, FSNNW)...and those two football games, neither of which involve the Seahawks (though one couldn't anyway)
MARINERS
Is spring training freakin' here yet? I'm tired of waiting.
SEAHAWKS
It's a big article to match Big Lo. It's even more about Loren Sandretzky that you may not have already known. I'd read some things, and I'd seen the Evening Magazine clip, but I still found out some things I didn't know about the big guy before, and he just might be coming to a reality show near you.
BASKETBALL
The Marvin Williams Watch
In the Tar Heels' 87-67 win over the Miami Hurricanes, Marvin Williams didn't have the greatest shooting day, going 2-for-9 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line for 7 points in 24 minutes of play off the bench. He also tallied 2 assists, stole a ball, and grabbed 8 rebounds. Marvin is now averaging 10.5 points and 6.7 rebounds in 22.1 minutes a game. If you skew the numbers and drag them out to 40 minutes, Marvin is averaging 19 points and 12.1 boards. Yes, I know he won't be getting 40 minutes a night, so the stat is somewhat moot.
The Tar Heels play at Virginia on Saturday (9a, ESPN).
Huskies
Here's your Husky story, and here's your Cougar story. The Huskies lead the Pac-10 in rebounding margin while playing a bunch of guards and Mike Jensen. Meanwhile the Cougars have four seniors and one junior, but the rest of the team are freshmen. The Cougars are more centered around getting the freshmen to buy into the Dick Bennett system, though the offense isn't exactly high-octane, but it is definitely designed to work.
The Huskies host Washington State today (1p, FSNNW) before going to Arizona on Thursday (5:30p, FSNNW) and Arizona State next Sunday (12:45p, CBS)
Bulldogs
After the Toreros hung in after 20 minutes, Gonzaga reeled off a 16-0 run to start the second half, in conjunction with San Diego missing their first 10 shots. Coach Few says this 68-56 win went down as "probably our best defensive game of the year." After being outrebounded by 10 in the loss to USF, the Zags manhandled the Toreros on the boards 44-21. JP Batista had another monster game with 22 and 7, while Ronny Turiaf had a Ben Wallace-like line of 7 and 13.
The Zags are home against the Portland Pilots on Saturday (8p, ESPN2)
Sonics
Yes, it's true. The Sonics are getting beat when teams find a way to match up small with them. Coach McMillan claims he couldn't go with his second unit of Fortson, Collison, and Radmanovic because they didn't match up with what Minnesota was throwing out there in Wally Szczerbiak and Troy Hudson. Meanwhile, the Sonics will face a Utah team tonight that has Andrei Kirilenko back in the lineup. The Jazz played last night at home against Memphis and got spanked 110-94. Kirilenko played 12 minutes and put up a line of 3 points, 2 boards, an assist, and 2 blocks.
Upcoming...
Tonight vs. Utah (6p, FSNNW)
Tuesday at Lakers (7:30p, FSNNW)
Wednesday at Utah (6p, FSNNW)
HOCKEY
If no labor stoppage had taken place, the Vancouver Canucks would have faced the Oilers in Edmonton last night and the New York Islanders in Vancouver tonight in their 48th and 49th games of the season. In the 48th and 49th games last season, they lost 2-1 to Dallas (they fell behind against a trapping team) and beat the eventual Stanley Cup champs, the Tampa Bay Lighting, by a 5-4 count in overtime. On January 21st of last season, the Canucks hadn't had a regulation win at home since November 8th, a streak that luckily was broken in the 50th game. The Canucks were 26-14-7-2 last year after 49 games, good for 61 points.
As for last night's games...
Portland beat Seattle 3-2. The sixth time was a charm for the Winter Hawks, as they sent the Thunderbirds to their first losing streak of the year. The Winter Hawks managed to kill off all seven Seattle power plays. Portland scored one goal per period, while Seattle scored both of their goals in the second. Garrett Festerling scored the first goal of the game for Portland almost eight minutes into the game. He wasn't answered until Ryan Gibbons scored shorthanded to tie the game with just over four minutes remaining in the middle frame. That 1-1 tie lasted for all of 53 seconds, as Brian Woolger made good on the power play for Portland (they'd already given up a goal on it). Tyler Metcalfe tied it once again 1:25 later to send the game to a 2-2 tie which would hold up to the end of the period. With 7:55 left, Dan DaSilva scored the winner while diving and driving toward the net. Portland outshot Seattle 41-30. Bryan Bridges stopped 38 in the Seattle net, while Blake Grenier stopped 28 in his third start after coming back from injury.
Kootenay beat Everett 4-2. Everett captain Torrie Wheat opened the scoring in the first period to give the Silvertips the early lead, but Kootenay scored the next four goals, three in the second period, to seal it. Zach Hamill added a too-little-too-late goal early in the third period. In an odd note, the T-Birds finally lost two games in a row, but Everett failed to take advantage, also dropping their last two. The Ice badly outshot Everett 31-21. Canada's gold medal goaltender Jeff Glass stopped 19 for Kootenay, and Mike Wall stopped 27 for Everett.

Have a great Sunday, everybody, and start the work week with...damn, I don't know...how about one of those Fuji apples? I think they're the best non-Golden Delicious apples out there, personally.
