WHO YOU GONNA CALL?

I had wanted to post about this all season long.

Now that the Florida Marlins have faced the Seattle Mariners, it's an appropriate time to bring up this very issue.

On FSN Florida (the Marlins cable network), when the Marlins make a pitching change, the "Call To The Bullpen" is sponsored by Maroone. Every team has a sponsor for their "call to the bullpen" deal. But this certain sponsor can't go unnoticed. Not when this sponsor rips off an 80's classic.

But this isn't just any normal "ripoff" song.

It's the mother of all ripoff songs.

When you need a car!
Truck or van!
Who you gonna call?
MAROONE!

That's right, Maroone is ripping off Ray Parker, Jr.'s 1984 hit "Ghostbusters", from the motion picture "Ghostbusters". So basically, it's a ripoff of another ripoff song. In 1984, singer Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis And The News sued Parker, Jr. for copyright infringement because he thought "Ghostbusters" sounded too similar to "I Want A New Drug", also a big hit in 1984. The lawsuit was settled out of court.

My question is whether Ray Parker, Jr. receives any benefits from Maroone? Does Parker, Jr. get a new car from Maroone for all this trouble?

What's next? Rick Astley accepting free meals from Chili's if they want to butcher "Together Forever"? The possibilities are endless. Just wait until corporate America starts butchering Smashing Pumpkins songs 10 years from now. You know they will.

Oh yes, there was a game tonight. The Mariners win their first-ever matchup with the Florida Marlins 4-3. I have a mild headache, which was partly caused by watching this ballgame. My headache wasn't helped by the whole Maroone fiasco either.

Meche. Dontrelle. Tomorrow.

Get hooked.
