LOUNGING AT WHIT'S END

Well, everyone, it's Sunday. There's football on the telebox. Not that the Seahawks are involved, but we do what we can.

(originally posted ~9:13a, moved back in time for the more worthwhile post by Jeremy; final content posted ~9:27a)

On TV tonight -- Cavaliers at Sonics (FSNNW, 6p)

MARINERS
Still creeping close to spring training.

SEAHAWKS
You know, I read this article last night, but I imagine there's a lot of people in the northwest getting their sunday editions to open up their sports section and read through a couple of paragraphs. WOW. It made me think back and realize that, yeah, maybe the Seahawks really did have a disconnection between the upper brass and the fans. If you don't believe that right now, the first one-word paragraph in the article will do it for you. I'm used to the usual Les Carpenter ripfest, but this -- this floored me, but it definitely wasn't unprovoked.

Doesn't it make too much sense? I know Jeremy is about to rev up a post that backs this, but why not Randy Mueller as president of the Seahawks? He knows and loves this organization, and that would go a long way in making up for the usual lull that would happen when clearing such front-office vacancies. Whatever decision the Seahawks make, they better do it quick because there are all these free agents running around. In a related note, why not bring back Mike Holmgren's salary cap guy? Mike Reinfeldt walked, perceivingly due to Whitsitt, but now the latter is gone.

A class-action suit wouldn't apply in this case, but there has to be something like a class-action tell-all book for everybody that felt shafted by the Bob Whitsitt tenure. Just like there eventually has to be a Lou Piniella tell-all autobiography on his years dealing with Howard Lincoln and Pat Gillick.

BASKETBALL
The Marvin Williams Watch
In North Carolina's 95-82 loss at Wake Forest yesterday, Marvin Williams tallied 15 points (perfect on six free throws) and 7 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench. Unfortunately, he also turned the ball over four times and fouled out. He definitely wasn't the only one getting into foul trouble in this one though, as it was a team-wide problem. A 5-for-18 shooting day out of Raymond Felton didn't help matters much either. All in all, the ACC is a tough conference and Wake has a freakin' good backcourt. Marvin is now averaging 10.6 points and 6.5 rebounds in 21.8 minutes per game. Carry that out to 40 minutes, and Marvin is averaging 19.5 points and 11.9 rebounds, which looks like a good Danny Fortson night to me if you throw in a technical foul.

The Tar Heels are at Clemson on Wednesday.

Huskies
The Huskies beat the Beavers of Oregon State 108-68. A total drubbing. Nate Robinson was reminded late in the game that he was close to a triple-double. The Huskies went on a 24-0 run at one point. Jamaal Williams had a career best of 24 in only 17 minutes. Tre Simmons led all scorers with 26.

But the game was sort of tempered due to the sudden hospitalization of OSU coach Jay John. Let's hope he gets out of this all right. It really scares me when guys in their mid-40s start having heart problems, and it scares me when it seems to be happening this often.

You know, Blaine Newnham made a reference to Deon Luton in his piece about Tre Simmons and I knew exactly who he was talking about. Then I felt old for a second. That memory was right up there with watching Pat Femerling and Todd MacCulloch, with a dash of Jason Hartman and a sprinkle of "damn, Rip Hamilton really did singlehandedly set back this program a bit."

The Huskies are home against Washington State next Sunday (FSNNW).

Bulldogs
The Zags beat the Waves of Pepperdine 86-62. Adam Morrison had a great night, going 10-for-16 from the floor and scoring 26. Ronny Turiaf is officially back, getting a double-double with 19 and 10. Gonzaga shot 30-for-50 from the field. Incredible.

The Zags go to the Bay Area to face the Dons of USF on Thursday (KONG 6/16 broadcast).

Sonics
In a way, the Sonics might have lucked out in their draw today, hosting Cleveland, who'd played the night before in Utah. Not that I expect LeBron James to be tired or something.

Reggie Evans wasn't practicing yesterday due to getting hacked hard by junior Mike Dunleavy and getting a bruised forearm. Evans was in considerable pain after the whistle, visibly clutching his forearm, grimacing, and bricking both of his free throws after the foul.

Upcoming...
Tonight vs. Cleveland
Tuesday vs. Denver
Friday vs. Minnesota

HOCKEY
Vancouver beat Everett 5-4. The Giants have exacted their revenge for Everett's upset of them last year by beating them in five straight games this year. One more win for the Giants over the Silvertips and it's a season sweep. The 'Tips managed to tie the game three times after being down 1-0 (Mitch Love), 2-1 (Alex Leavitt), and 4-2 (Karel Hromas and Cody Thoring), coming back from the latter deficit in the third period. Of course, Thoring took some lustre away from the tying goal by being put in the box for high sticking with 2:09 left in the final period. A mere 31 seconds later, Triston Grant of the Giants tallied the winner. Ryan Costanzo and Mitch Bartley scored the earlier goals for the Giants, and Gilbert Brule and Kyle Lamb built up the lead to 4-2 before the Silvertips' onslaught to tie the game for the final time. Everett outshot Vancouver 23-20. Mike Wall stopped 15 for Everett, while Marek Schwarz stopped 19 for Vancouver.

Kootenay beat Portland 5-2. Both of Portland's normal starting goalies were nursing injuries, so 15-year-old Kurtis Mucha got the call once again in net for the Winter Hawks. This time he would face a team anchored by Jeff Glass (25 saves) in net and Nigel Dawes, two key cogs of Canada's gold-medal World Juniors team. Dawes did record a goal and an assist and was plus-3, but it was two goals each from Adam Cracknell and Dale Mahovsky that sealed this one for the Ice. Well, Dawes' goal was the game-winner with 4:32 left in the third period. Kootenay badly outshot Portland 37-25. Kurtis Mucha stopped 33 in net.

Portland beat Puget Sound 5-0. Well, this is bad news right here. A weekend sweep for the Tomahawks sees them tumble from their perilous one-point division lead into a three-point deficit behind Portland for the division lead, with the Pioneers having a game in hand. Andrew Gorski pitched the shutout for Portland, while the Tomahawks were bitten by the bug of penalties. They rolled up 72 minutes' worth of penalties, more than double Portland's 34. Travis Cottom stopped 25 for the Tomahawks, who outshot the Pioneers 35-28.
