DAVE, DAVE, DAVE....
Since Dave from Dave's Mariner Blog does NOT have an e-mail address listed, I can't talk to him privately. So here we go...
Miguel Tejada's deal is a bargain because if you compare his contract to the other top shortstops in baseball, it really is. Think about it. 6 years, 72 million for Tejada is a bargain compared to Derek Jeter's 10-year, 189 million deal as well as Alex Rodriguez's 10-year, 252 million deal. I'd much rather have Tejada at 72 million over 6 years than QUINTON MCCRACKEN at 1.75 million for just one season. He's worth it. Keep in mind that I'm not pissed at the M's brass for not matching the deal. That is a big deal, no doubt about it. I'm just more pissed off about their PLAN X...screw Plan B, C, D, E, F...etc. Again, we go from talking about Miguel Tejada this weekend and are now talking about Quinton McCracken and Scott Spiezio.
I'll give you credit for saying that Jeter's deal is one of the worst contracts in sports. But at the same time, he does have 4 World Series rings. How many rings does Ichiro have? An d keep in mind that the Yankees can AFFORD to have Jeter's "unbearable" contract on their books. The Mariners can't afford to overpay Ichiro.
I know all about Ichiro's presence with the Mariners organization. I worked with the M's merchandising department for two seasons. I've sold plenty of Ichiro stuff, so believe me, I know the impact of #51. But the fact is, he is not a $10 million dollar player, regardless of how much Ichiro merchandise is sold. What's sad about all of this is that players such as Ken Griffey, Jr., Alex Rodriguez, and Randy Johnson were never able to make at least 10 million a season in Seattle. Those three guys are better than Ichiro, I hate to break it to all of the Japanese tourists.
All the Ichiro fotoballs, playing cards, overpriced hats, bobbleheads, bat pens, mini bats, playground balls, etc. can't hide what is really missing from Safeco Field:
A World Series championship. And paying Ichiro more than what he is worth seriously detracts the M's from that goal. Like it matters though. I'm already expecting the Derek Bell minor league contract to come in a few weeks.
Dave, I'm not mad at ya. Debating is healthy. At least you're not trying to defend Gilvasi today, and that's a good thing.
Good luck to your Cornhuskers in the Alamo Bowl, even if they are going to get Jeff Smokered...
