[initial partial post]

In 25 words or less: At least with a midday game, if the game is decided on one pitch, you're not wasting nearly three hours of your night.

This one featured Felix Hernandez going up against Jose Contreras.

TOP 1ST
Ichiro fell behind 0-2 before bouncing to second on a 1-2 pitch. Jose Lopez whiffed on an 0-2 pitch off the plate outside. Raul Ibañez fisted an 0-2 single over the head of the shortstop Uribe and into left for a single. Carl Everett fell behind 0-2 before whiffing over a 1-2 dirtball (2-3 putout). Contreras threw 14 pitches.

BOTTOM 1ST
Scott Podsednik walked on a full-count pitch up and in. Tadahito Iguchi was nearly nicked on an inside second pitch before singling into rightfield to move Podsednik to third. Jim Thome was ahead 2-0 when Rene Rivera and Adrian Beltre visited Felix on the mound. Two pitches later, Thome walloped a homer that didn't take long to leave, exiting immediately into the rightfield bullpen.

Paul Konerko hit a sinking liner to Lawton running and charging inward in centerfield. AJ Pierzynski couldn't check his swing and whiffed over an 0-2 pitch inside. Joe Crede bounced out to short. Hernandez threw 23 pitches.

TOP 2ND
Roberto Petagine bounced a 2-0 pitch along the third-base line that went off the third-base bag and back toward the infield, and of course Crede had no play on the single. Adrian Beltre doubled into the leftfield corner, moving Petagine to third. Matt Lawton smoked the first pitch into Konerko's glove at first, and he nearly threw doubled Beltre off of second with a throw from the knees. Rene Rivera whiffed on an 0-2 pitch down over the outside corner. Yuniesky Betancourt rolled a 2-0 pitch to third. Contreras threw 12 pitches and had 26 through two.

BOTTOM 2ND
Rob Mackowiak flew out to Ibañez in shallowish leftfield. With the count 1-2 on Uribe, members of the Mariner training staff came to check on Hernandez, who stayed in the game. Uribe ended up foul-tipping the next pitch into Rivera's mitt behind the plate. Ross Gload bounced a 2-2 pitch back to Hernandez, who ran it to the bag. Hernandez threw 14 pitches and had 37 through two.

TOP 3RD
Ichiro bounced the first pitch to second. Lopez fell behind 0-2 before flying out to center on the 1-2 offering. Ibañez gave a 2-0 pitch a decent ride, flying out to fairly deep right. Contreras threw eight pitches and had 34 through three.

BOTTOM 3RD
Podsednik watched all three pitches for strikes, the last at the knees over the inside corner. Iguchi lined to Beltre at third, who leaped to climb the ladder and make the catch. Thome was ahead 2-0 before putting a double into leftcenter on a full count (major pull shift, Ibañez was quite a way toward center). Konerko was green-lit on a 3-0 pitch and dumped a single into leftcenter to score Thome.

Pierzynski watched as Mariner pitching coach Rafael Chaves ran to the mound for a visit with the count 2-1. Pierzunski ended up taking a 2-2 curve over the outside corner. Hernandez threw 25 pitches and had 62 through three.

TOP 4TH
Everett whiffed on a 2-2 breaking ball away. Petagine popped a 2-2 pitch into fairly deep rightfield. Beltre grounded the second pitch hard to third. Contreras threw 15 pitches and had 49 through four.

BOTTOM 4TH
Crede was ahead 2-0 before spanking a 2-2 pitch for a single through the hole on the left side. Mackowiak rode the first pitch all the way to the wall in centerfield, where Lawton came down with it as Crede had to race back to first. Uribe whiffed on an 0-2 curve off the plate outside and low. Gload singled into rightcenter to move Crede to third. Podsednik lined to Lawton in leftcenter on a 2-2 pitch. Hernandez threw 18 pitches and had 80 through four.

TOP 5TH
Lawton was ahead 3-1 before flying out to right on a full count. Rivera hit a failed swinging bunt in front of the plate on the first pitch (2-3 putout). Betancourt grounded hard to second. Contreras threw ten pitches and had 59 through five.

BOTTOM 5TH
Iguchi bounced the first pitch to the left of the mound, where Beltre came up and fired, but it was ruled that Petagine hopped up to get the throw and was off the bag, though replays showed he was down in time before Iguchi touched the bag. Thome walked on four pitches, sending Iguchi to second and Chaves to the mound for a visit. Konerko took an 0-2 curve of death over the outside corner. Pierzynski worked a 1-2 count full before whiffing on a full-count curve -- also, Iguchi took off on the pitch and was nailed at third by Rivera. Hernandez threw 15 pitches.

Hernandez' line: 5 innings, 4 runs, 7 hits, 2 walks, 7 strikeouts, 95 pitches (57 strikes)

TOP 6TH
Ichiro tapped a full-count pitch back to the mound. Lopez one-hopped a full-count pitch back to the mound. Ibañez walked on a full-count breaking ball in the dirt. Everett singled into rightcenter to move Ibañez to third. Petagine worked a 1-2 count (including a 2-2 checkswing) for a walk to load the bases and bring manager Ozzie Guillen out to the mound for a visit. Beltre took a 3-1 pitch low and away to force in Ibañez and keep the bases loaded.

Lawton was ahead 3-0 but flew out to Podsednik in left on a full count. Contreras threw 42 pitches and had 101 through six.

BOTTOM 6TH
Bobby Livingston came in for Hernandez. Crede got ahead 3-0 before popping to Lopez near the rightfield line on a 3-1 pitch. Mackowiak took a 1-2 pitch to the right forearm. Uribe bounced slowly to second, stopping a possibility of a double play and only resulting in a 4-3 putout as Mackowiak went to second. Gload grounded the second pitch to second. Livingston threw 12 pitches.

TOP 7TH
Jeremy Reed, hitting for Rivera, fell behind 0-2 before flying out to fairly deep left on a 2-2 pitch. Betancourt chopped up the middle on the first pitch, and Uribe ranged over to throw him out on the run. Ichiro bounced the second pitch to second. Contreras threw eight pitches and had 109 through seven.

BOTTOM 7TH
Kenji Johjima came in to catch. Podsednik chopped an 0-2 pitch to first for a tricky and quick PFP play, where Livingston barely beat Podsednik to the first-base bag. Iguchi had the hitters' counts before punching a single through the left side on a 3-1 pitch. Thome whiffed on a 1-2 breaking ball away. Hargrove visited the mound. Konerko was ahead 2-0 and ended up grounding to Betancourt in the hole on the left side, who threw to second for the forceout of Iguchi. Livingston threw 16 pitches and had 28 total.

TOP 8TH
Brian Anderson came in to play centerfield and Mackowiak moved to right. Lopez rolled the first pitch to short.

Neal Cotts came in for Contreras. Ibañez popped a 2-0 pitch to Crede, who slid near the rolled tarp and had the ball go off his glove (I thought it went off the tarp) and then hot-potatoed the ball off arms and legs before finally grabbing it with his bare hand for the out. Everett bounced the first pitch to a charging Crede coming in from third. Cotts threw four pitches.

Contreras' line: 7 1/3 innings, 1 run, 4 hits, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts, 110 pitches (68 strikes)
Cotts' line: 2/3 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 0 strikeouts, 4 pitches (2 strikes)

BOTTOM 8TH
Pierzynski was sawed off inside on the second pitch, fisting it out front on the right side to Livingston, who tossed to first. Crede lined out to Ibañez in left on the second pitch. Mackowiak popped the first pitch to Beltre in foul ground on the left side. Livingston threw five pitches.

Livingston's line: 3 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 0 walks, 1 strikeout, 33 pitches (22 strikes)

TOP 9TH
Bobby Jenks came in for Cotts, who had warmed up to start the inning. Willie Bloomquist, hitting for Petagine, popped to Mackowiak just in front of the stands along the rightfield line. Adrian Beltre fell behind 0-2 and barely failed to check his swing on a 1-2 pitch in the dirt. Lawton poked a seeing-eye single through the hole on the right side on the first pitch. Johjima popped to Uribe in shallow leftcenter.

Jenks' line: 1 inning, 0 runs, 1 hit, 0 walks, 1 strikeout, 10 pitches (6 strikes)
