MOCK DRAFT, TAPPED OUT!

While I haven't been as active as in the past here at Sports And Bremertonians, I did have enough time to take part in the 2006 NFL Mock Draft over at Chicago Sports Blogs.com.

"With the 31st pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select Darryl Tapp, defensive end, Virginia Tech"

Those aren't Paul Tagliabue's words, but my words, at least for the CSB's mock draft.

Over the last two months, I've agonized over who the Seahawks will take with their 31st pick. Should they go defensive line? Secondary? Guard? The Seahawks could go in either of those directions come Saturday when the 31st pick comes up.

Tapp (6'1", 258 lbs) comes from a successful program at Virginia Tech, led by Frank Beamer. Under Beamer, the Hokies have been known as a team that has excellent defensive and special teams units. This weekend alone, the Hokies defense could see two of their defensive stars from 2005 go in the first round.

I've seen several Virginia Tech games over the past couple of years and one thing that I've noticed is that Tapp always got to the quarterback. In his career in Blacksburg, Tapp had 21.5 sacks, including 10 in 2005, his senior season.

Tapp was a two-time All-ACC first team member in his junior and senior seasons. The last two seasons, the Hokies have been in the Sugar Bowl (2004) and the Gator Bowl (2005). Tapp was definitely a huge reason why the Hokies were 21-5 the last two seasons.

The Seahawks are the defending NFC Champions (yes it's true, East Coast Media). This business of selecting next-to-last in the 1st round is interesting to say the least. But it's a position that I'm sure Tim Ruskell doesn't mind being in.

Is Tapp the answer? We'll find out Saturday afternoon.

In other Seahawks news, they have acquired safety Mike Green from the Chicago Bears for a sixth-round pick. Depth, baby. Can't have enough of it.
