MANY

Other sports stuff that I had on my mind for Monday...and I'm not talking about Ricky Williams. Or the Yankees. Or the Red Sox. Or Lance Armstrong, though he's good, and makes my biking to work look like taking out the trash.

-- Bremerton 2000 grad Tara Kirk finished third in both the preliminary (1:07.80) and semifinal (1:07.20) of the 100-meter breaststroke races at the FINA World Championships in Montreal. She finished behind Leisel Jones and Jessica Hardy in the prelim, and the two swapped spots in the semifinal, with Hardy setting a world record of 1:06.20. The 100-meter final is today, with Tara sharing the pool with four swimmers from the 100-meter breaststroke final last summer in Athens. The FINA 100m breaststroke final is at 3pm (Pacific) today, if I'm reading the schedule right. She will also partake in the 200-meter breaststroke event, which starts on Thursday. Best of luck to Tara.

-- It's a crazy time for hockey. While the Red Wings waived Ray Whitney, Derian Hatcher, and Darren McCarty (1/3 of the Grind Line), it was surprising, yet unsurprising because of the intricacies of the new collective bargaining agreement. Much like the NFL and NBA, some weird stuff will go on involving the salary cap, whether it be the "salary cap casualty" of football, or the "cap filler" in the eight-player trades in basketball.

-- Then there are the Canucks, who somehow landed the 10th pick in the NHL Draft thanks to the lottery. What might the Canucks do with that pick? They could trade up and get an even better player. One seemingly popular opinion in Vancouver is to go after Gilbert Brule, the stellar Vancouver Giant who kept the hockey-starved fans thoroughly entertained last winter. If they stay at #10, they could be looking at someone like Carey Price, arguably the best goalie in the WHL last season. He had a pretty crazy shutout streak last season, if I remember right. Of course, last year in the WHL was the year of the shutout.

-- Dealing with Canucks of the present, Mattias Ohlund and Sami Salo both want to stay in Vancouver. Two key defensive cogs want to stay, and I'd say that's good. Salo does have the hardest slapshot on the team, for what that's worth. I'm sure people want to know the fates of Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi before knowing that these two defensemen want to stay, but oh well.

Yes, it's hard to fit this stuff into Mariner posts, as you may well imagine. In the meantime, look for a spike in the amount of Seahawk-related posts this week. Sometimes we get so busy around here that we forget to read papers and see stuff like Shawn Kemp trying to get back into the NBA. It gets busy, I tell ya.
