DAN WHELDON WINS INDY 500
It's about time that Michael Andretti got to drink the milk in Victory Lane.
Andretti is the car owner for Dan Wheldon's #26 Jim Beam Honda car, which won the 89th running of the Indianapolis 500 today. Wheldon has now won 4 of the 5 races on the IRL schedule this season.
Media darling Danica Patrick finished 4th, the highest finish ever by a female at the Brickyard. She had led late in the race, but she just didn't have enough fuel to win. No shame in finishing 4th though. She is a rookie and with a good team behind her (Bobby Rahal and David Letterman), no doubt she will keep competing with the best the IRL has to offer.
But the story today is Wheldon and Andretti, at least in my mind. I was an Andretti fan growing up. He could just never win the Indy 500 for some reason. Granted, this win for Andretti came as a car owner, but it's still a victory. Add this to the list of accomplishments the Andretti family have achieved throughout the years.
A victory at the greatest track in open-wheel racing.
Drink that milk, Michael. You too, Dan.
