WIND CHILLY

Well, here's how it's coming out in the wash for Tuesday.

With something that won't fit anywhere else in the post, the Pacific Rim Sports Summit has had a meeting of its members' representatives. It's going to be interesting how the choices of venues end up hashing out. As for corporate sponsorship, they've got a few lined up, and Boeing will be huge.

MARINERS
Oh man, we're just a little over a month from pitchers and catchers reporting. The buildup and the suspense are just eating at me.

SEAHAWKS
Sources are cited as saying that Mike Holmgren will stay. As much as I wanted him gone after the second loss to the Rams, when it comes right down to it, who would they replace Holmgren with if he got fired? They'd be hard-pressed to find a better (or at least more accomplished) coach than Mike Holmgren. Now it's time to sift through the mess of free agents and put together a draft strategy. Good luck.

Also, Shaun Alexander and Walter Jones will start for the NFC in the Pro Bowl.

Why do so many of these guys have to be free agents? Why did the front office let this happen??

It's going to be weird getting used to not having significant material on the Seahawks to look at every day. I know the lull is going to come soon, but it's going to be weird considering we've pretty much been following them since the preseason.

BASKETBALL
The Marvin Williams Watch
This week, the Tar Heels are home against Georgia Tech tonight (ESPN telecast), and are at Wake Forest on Saturday.

Huskies
I seem to remember an ad from my childhood for Seafirst Bank that featured a few clips of Husky women's hoops highlights, and it prominently featured Chris Gobrecht as the coach of this up-and-coming team. Hell, one could argue that they'd arrived on the big scene and were doing quite well. God knows why she left for Florida State (other than money); I didn't think her job here was done yet. At least the USC job brought her close to her childhood home. The Husky women, now led by June Daugherty in the post-Gobrecht, post-Mendiola era, go to Oregon on Thursday and to Oregon State on Saturday.

This week, the Husky men have two home games against Oregon (Thursday) and against Oregon State (Saturday).

Bulldogs
This week, Gonzaga has home games against Loyola Marymount on Thursday and Pepperdine on Saturday.

Sonics
Yes, the Sonics face the team tonight that put a pasting on them back on opening night. Since then the Sonics have (understatement) found themselves and forged and identity as a team (or whatever cliche sports phrase you'd like to use right here). Right after the loss to the Clippers, the Sonics won nine straight and turned everyone's heads.

Vitaly Potapenko just wants a chance to play. In other words, he's on the wrong team. Does the NBA really have a spot left for Potapenko? Starters' minutes, mostly likely on a crappy team somewhere? I'm not really that sure.

You know, I'm really enjoying this on-court postgame huddle thing. For me, it's worth it not just to see how Ray Allen or Danny Fortson speak to the rest of the guys, but it's worth it to even see Damien Wilkins and Robert Swift looking happy in the huddle. To think it's the brainchild of Jerome James, well, I'm not sure I can quite wrap my head around it, but it just might be his most meaningful contribution this season to the team. By the way, the story of the wrapping paper (or lack thereof) in the Sonics' Secret Santa gift exchange is an average to above-average side-splitter.

Reggie Evans is doubtful for tonight's game.
